  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New arri camera at IBC

I am sure the comparitive tests were with an F35

You sure? I thought the F35 had a bigger dynamic range than 11.3 stops which is the DR of their "big competitor"??? I'm sure they've compared it to every camera going but that figure of 11.3 stops caught my eye in terms of who they're aiming their main competition at...namely Red it should go without saying...

The back to back comparisons shown looked like F35, base ISO for that camera was I think 450.

hi stephen

did the sensor demonstrator unit have an active cooling fan running?

The new Arri cameras will have a fan rated at 20 decibels, it's user changeable in the field it ages and gets more noisy as it ages. The electronics are sealed so no salt spray or sand can get inside the camera. There is some cooling technology they did not want to speak about.
There was no obvious noise coming from the working demonstrator, so I really don't know the answer to your question.

thanx stephen..your info was exactly what we were looking for

Man...forget the Arri, the Penelope 6K digital mags are what i am waiting for, those guru's in France have made a truly future proof camera there, 2/3 perf and a digital mag, and you just know it will be top notch. If i had the cash i would purchase a penelope today.

Are you saying Aaton develops censors now?

I would love to shoot with Penelope... but on film.

Pat

Oh yes!!!..they were always planning to make a digital magazine. There are 19 Penelope's out at the last count and 15 of them are shooting 2 perf projects.

You got it, Robert.
Penelope is the most interesting and future-proof owner/operator camera (it's a fine choice for rental houses too) right now. Very smart. I don't know the MSRP, but since it seems largely future proof it might be the MOST economical choice in the long run.
I have not heard any updates on the digital back but looking forward to it. One interesting point is that with the digital back we might have the option of removing the film gate and using a FF35 sized sensor in the back (think 8K or 12K) Imagine one camera that does many things...
I'm sure Mitch can update that story.
Cheers,
Harry

ICE here in the UK took ownership of their Penelope some weeks ago and it went out to work instantly. I think there is going to be a real renaissance for 2-Perf. Most recently i watched the film Hunger, shot 2-perf, there is one lovely scene in the prison between Bobby sands ( Michael Fassbinder ) and the Priest, a 20 minute take using just under 1 X 1000ft roll of film, i found it exhilarating to watch. Aaton are definitely already well into the digital age, their newly developed 'Aaton K' scanner http://www.aaton.com/products/post/aatonk/ looks remarkable, with this in mind i look forward to the Digital Magazine with great anticipation. The Penelope comes in at about 150000 i think, but everyone made so far is out working, i have no doubt they are a great investment, every camera is built by one man, so they aren't pumping them out at any speed.

I can tell ou a couple things about Penelope.

- She's a super sexy camera. Engineering and design triumph. Once you go French...

- Our cameras are in constant demand. We barely have time to even look at them in the shop before they go back out again.

- The first US feature film shot on Penelope, The Fighter, recently completed production using a pair of 2-perf cameras from Abel. There's a stry about it on our blog Cine Technica at blog.abelcine.com.

- As far as the questions on the digital back, I can say that there is a lot of work going on and all of the above mentioned options have been considered. It is going to be an incredible camera with features beyond what you know in any other camera.

Hey guys I go to Syracuse University and the Syracuse film festival is hosting a trade show with demo sessions next month and Aaton is going to be there and they are bringing a Penelope and a cantar to demo. Just thought I would let you all know. Here is a link to the site with the announcement http://syrfilmfest.com/rushes/detail/29

Great camera. Shitty recording options. Thats pretty much what it boils down to moving forward...

And IMO, this camera is analogous to a RED ONE M-X more so than it would be to an Epic, even at price point.

Nice to see that RED is causing the older companies to stop and take note. Im sure the ARRI will be a fantastic camera, I just think its aimed at a smaller market, unlike the R1/Epic/Scarlet.

forum, youtube channel, mock-ups, modular pricing system, ...

;-)

i second stephen on the arri evf, but i like the bomb better.

best wishes,
martin

p.s. btw p&s are also offering a digital back for arri SR cameras ...
