  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New arri camera at IBC

It has a very good image, only about 1 frame delay.

You are right on that, I stand corrected.

So according to the .pdf referenced above, the lower end model will offer some form of internal "HD" recording (and be available 2010 June)

The two higher end cameras will offer on-board uncompressed ARRIRAW recording (and be available 2010 Sept and 2010 Dec respectively)

Will be interesting to see how each of those image files compares to 5K / 4.5K / 4K REDCODE RAW files.

They have a few questions to answer at IBC.

What's the point? What do they have to bring to the table that isn't available in the Red systems? How do you edit these raw files?

I think he is talking about the about the price of the new Red system.
 
I'm surprised at how many people are sold on this camera and we haven't even seen the first images yet. I love the competition, but I don't see much difference in form factor from Red's offerings, except in the EVF department, which looks like Arri subbed out to contractors top to bottom. Why not hold Arri to the same standard we hold Red accountable to?

What do you mean by hold them to the same standard? People are interested and excited by the possibilities of Arri just like Red, Epic, and Scarlet. I think Red will beat them in price-point, but Arri has a long track record of quality and professionalism.

I think they are sold not on the camera but on Arri and their reputation based on past product introductions and the variety of equipment they have used over the years. I'm not in the market for a $40K plus camera no matter what it is, but if I was a high end movie or commercial producer that had used many Arri products over the years I'm sure these cameras would be something to seriously consider. I think that is all people are getting at in this thread.

ARRI earned their rep and I expect the new D21 line to be excellent. That said, a look at their renders and marketing angle is regurgitated RED. Perhaps that's why the Germans are better known for precision than imagination :boxing_smiley:

Callous generalizations aside, props to the Madman and the Red Team for changing the game. Its kinda mind blowing to think what our expectations are like these days - rez beyond HD, RAW image data, big sensors, on board recording options, etc.

Product development cycles have accelerated, or is there anyone out there that really believes that Sony planned to ship the F35 only 14 months after the F23? My guess is they were planning about a 4 year window for the F23 until the RedOne hit the market.

Anyone care to argue that ARRI would be selling D21s at the price points suggested if RED Digital did not exist? My guess would be at least double.

Exciting times.

At the ARRI booth they have a box with a working version of their latest sensor and I'm very impressed with the low light performance I saw on the live feed.
 
Another thing... If you go and see ARRI's show at the IBC Big Screen they will show test shots they did with their new sensor versus "their biggest competitor". They didn't mention RED at all, but it was quite obvious that's who they meant. You guys at RED should be happy with the fact that you're the biggest competitor of a company that's been around since 1917. Well done!

I agree, RED has drastically altered the price/performance ratio.
