  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Accessories in Stock

would also like to see som pictures of the Gunner fully kitted out to see the full potensial of this rig realsed. A little hard to judge just from that pic alone. Would also help to have å 360° view on it to see all the mounting options and holes. Can this evolve in to a full shoulder rig, and if so, how? looks a little hard to get balanced.

Smart grip

Smart grip

Any plans for a smart grip that mounts on the Gunner and gives record and menu control? That would be great. Even an extension hookup for the side handle would be better then nothing.

I have suggested before that RED market a bracket that could be mounted on rods that presents the same fixtures and contacts as the side of the brain where the handle mounts. In my mind, such an "extension" leverages the functionality/R&D of the side handle.

What would be even better, but take longer to design & build would be an ergonomic "smart grip", perhaps along the lines of the "super grip" that RED made noises about 4 years ago.

Imagine a control unit that shared DNA with both the side handle and the RedMote, I might call it the ergonomic RedMote Pro...

Whatever cool name RED comes up with I think the company that changed digital cinema and made a nuclear reactor in a matchbox is up to the task.

Imagine a human hand friendly handle with a rosette/gimbal that would allow it to be securely mounted on rods/NATO rails, etc - put it where you want it.

Electronics in the core with a rechargeable battery internal.

Wireless over RedLink, but with a LEMO jack as well. Perhaps a cable could be made that attached to the brain where the side handle does? I am imagining something a little thicker than the null plate that covers the side handle contacts on the brain. This cable could be as short as 18" and provide a bulletproof option in case of wireless interference. In most cases just putting a rubber cap over the LEMO port and using RedLink over such a short distance should be reliable, but in some environments nothing beats hard wired.

Functionality should be similar to side handle and RedMote. Perhaps a small LCD like on the side handle could be up on top (I'm thinking ski pole handle style with a kip handle sized knob above where your hand lives).

Your thumb should be able to operate a joystick like "button" similar to a MicroForce (similar to the R1 rear joystick but with a lower profile).

Each finger should have a button you can reach, probably record start/stop for the index finger. They should not be too easy to depress accidentally and you should have the option to make them inert (like when you are planning active hand held maneuvers). Also suggest a mode where the buttons go inert during recording only.

In a perfect world I would want a second "smart" grip for my left hand that included a focus wheel/knob for the thumb and another one for the index finger to ramp iris.

I could go on, but the core takeaway is that putting much of the functionality of the side handle into a form factor that fits neatly in the hand and can be mounted securely in a number of different places would be a terrific tool.

And if there is an SDK/developer program for people to develop DSMC modules, the Red Online Store could be iTunes for cinema hardware mods.

You imagine it. You design and prototype it. Submit it for validation and approval to Red. It gets built and shared for the world of connected Red Professionals.

I can't wait to use the QR platforms to go between sticks/steadicam/clutch. Gonna be seamless... and magical :)

if you want to go 15mm lightweight and keep your mattebox and FF sttached, we need the Modular Assault Plate to invoke that magic...Looking forward to that day.

In the meantime it's great to see all the other new stuff in stock!

for "standard" height you need to use the Quick Release assembly.. that will get everything to standard height to work with other 3rd party stuff that can't adjust..

Is the add height to get to standard height 11.8mm ?

Hi, is it also possible to mount the spinner EVF on the side of the tactical top plate( on a swat rail) or shall we use the adjustable top mount ?
Thanks, andreas

I just recieved my tactical top plate so i have yet to set it up, but i know it is possible to mount the swat rail on the side for the Spinner EVF to fit.

With the adjustable top mount, you will of course have the ability to adjust the distance of the EVF, and allow a much faster set up compared to the tactical top plate. With the top plate i believe you will have to remove some parts of the Epic (protection for the fan) to allow it to fit. I will test everything out a bit later today.

That works just fine, puts the EFF in a pretty good place. The top mount just adds a left to right adjustment. I've accomplished that by mounting the EVF on the sliding top handle. pix later

Would appreciate pix, thanks.

Do you have shots of it rigged?... anyone. ?

Not yet, but I can say you will LOVE this Mark... especially when fitted with a round ROSETTE handle rather than a grip... why?
it forces your arms way in and creates a very NARROW and lightweight handheld rig. Been holding off the clutch for this gizmo since
MATT demo'd it at NAB last year.

You have to feel it to get it... but imagine your elbows really tight, not sticking out like a chicken... and for your work, I bet it proves invaluable...

Hmmm, i like that idea. :)

Tonaci has a great little iPhone video he took last year of Matt going over the Gunner system he will post shortly.

You are Da MAN TONACI!!

. . . oh and: RED Product Demo "Shot On iPhone" . . . is that ironic or just funny? Alanis Morissette forever confused me on that word

Just breaking down price. If you are buying the Gunner + Bolt-ON DSMC quick release.... wouldn't it be cheaper and lighter to just go with the DSMC Quick Release and the shoulder pad + 19mm bracket?

Why would I want to go gunner which would appear to be heavier and more expensive not to mention less extensible (Clutch being the fully deck'ed out package.
