I just finished watching the Netflix show Bright. The HDR look of the show is fantastic. I wanted to know more about the Tech Spec's of how they filmed the show. So I went on IMDB and read over the small list of spec they had listed. They shot the show on an Alexa 65, Alexa Mini and Epic-W. I know they needed to shoot/deliver in 4k per Netflix request but why shoot on the Alexa 65 vs the Alexa SXT? The Alexa SXT provides you with a HDR option and why shoot some scenes on the Epic-W?

The only Arri camera that Netflix will approve as an "A" camera on one of their original productions is the Alexa 65. No other Alexa cameras meet the minimum 4K resolution requirement. A Mini or an XT/SXT can be used as a supplemental camera, but not as the primary. The Epic-W is popular for both visual effects and drone use, as well as for overcranks higher than an A65 can manage, so I assume that's what it was used for.

One more thing.... I wouldn't necessarily take IMDB as gospel when you're talking about camera equipment used.

I agree. There’s often more use of multiple types of cameras than people realize. Especially when it comes to VFX, aerials, crash cams, underwater, etc.

I really enjoyed that movie.
Amazing dark scenes.

Yeah, I doubt RED was used for much on this movie (likely just the one specific slow-mo scene/shot); don’t really think it should be in the Shot on RED category as it’s definitely more of an Alexa65 showpiece.

cinematography was awesome. I liked the story too. Really felt good to see something with a bit more creativity and didn't spoon feed you all the answers.

haven't watched it yet, would you say you absolutely have to watch it in HDR? Or is it still great without? Especially talking about the "amazing dark scenes" Eric mentioned. (I only got 4k and haven't upgraded yet.)

Anyone know what paintball guy was doing ?

Probably shooting the floor or walls/vehicles etc for impact hits - saves having to set up rows of explosive squibs (and means it's easier to do multiple takes as you don't need to re-set the squibs).

I just saw it, and I thought it was pretty good. Very well shot and acted.
Is it perfect? of course not, but it was very entertaining, and this new world of Orcs and elves got me quite curious to see more of it. The concept is really really good. I love that feries are a nuisance...
Who would have thought that Lord Of The Rings meets Training Day could be this interesting.

I think we have new Blade Runner in the making here.... got me back on the SciFi wagon....

I must be old, as it really reminded me of Alien Nation... yet, in the reviews I've seen (or comments etc), everyone mentions other cop movies and LOTR as the mash up, but it really is Alien Nation in a new skin.

OMG that was killing me! I couldn't remember why it felt so familiar, but yes that's exactly it!
Oh, also... we're both old now.

A friend of mine had a good joke: "it's like Zootopia + Bad Boys." Very hard to disagree with that.

It's a horrible movie in terms of story and character, but I have to say it looked beautiful from start to finish. The lens flares were really stunning -- I'm curious what lenses they were using and how much was real and how much was VFX. It looked very real to me.

It's very definitely an Alexa 65 in this behind-the-scenes video:

It looked amazing!
The story started off pretty original and pretty good, but then started to suck pretty fast with the elves and the magic wand and thin plot. They should have kept it 'Training Day style like without the magic and without the dark lord trying to destroy the planet".

I think the magic portion of the plot is a nod to the millenials growing up on lotr, narnjas, etc. very clever. Also adds a little levity and humor. I liked that it does not try too hard to be a typical cliche aliens vs humans scifi...
