  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nan's New 11-16mm

Mathews attention to detail and build quality is amazing.

I ordered Nan's Tokina mod version.
its extremely well done. Very smooth mechanics, nice size and weight.
If you like the original version of this lens as I did, you are just going to love this one. A perfect complement to my Red 18-50 and 50-150.
its mechanics are actually much better that those Red zooms, and on par with the RPP's.
from order to receiving it took about 3 weeks and Nan responded my emails with questions right away. You can't go wrong

Just an information: I am about to order Nan's new revised version Tokina 11-16mm. Looks very PRO and better then Duclos.

I got the newer vision on my hand, had been test it by myself, and I also sent it to [Salon Film Hong Kong -- http://www.salonmedia.com/] for the test, as I feedback from their report:
well made and all meet cine lens style, a great lens for run & gun...

Go Duclos or go home. You get what you pay for. The road of life is paved with weak imitations, man up...

I have Nan's new PL Tokina 11-16mm lens. Actually used in on a music video over the past couple of days. It is very light and well construced. The images on the monitor looked great!

Can you guys describe the mechanics regarding the lens throw - how many degrees do you get? Also the hood seems a little big - does it vignette on the wide? If so when does the vignette disappear?

thanks for your input.

Lame.

C'mon guys. The only personal opinions on this forum from those who have actually seen or used this product have been positive. Am I wrong in understanding that the Duclos housing does not map the focus marks to the outside barrel but relies on the original Tokina internal indicator? As the optics are the same, does this not on the surface seen intrinsically superior? I think many of the comments here that outright condemn this product based on its origin smirk of a chauvinistic and if not racist, certainly nativist attitude that is repulsive and not appropriate for this forum. Ok, so Duclos is a buddy but dissing another product without testing or firsthand experience is just not OK.

Just my $.02.....

While I genuinely believe that the Duclos 11-16mm is the best 11-16mm available, there is no reason not to consider Nan's version as a viable option. It looks like it was machined well from quality materials. The mount appears to be stainless steel (something the Russians haven't learned yet) and the markings are clear and concise.

On top of that, we have a 5-6 month wait time for the Duclos 11-16mm lens. Nan's 11-16mm conversion may very well be the best alternative I've seen yet. I would like to encourage everyone to try the lens for themselves before judging. Yes, Nan's conversion comes from China and the Duclos version is USA, but the Tokina 11-16mm comes from China anyway and Tokina did a great job with this lens straight out of the box.

For those waiting for the NEW ASPHERICAL 11-16mm... The 11-16mm already has aspherical elements. Nothing new. Just rumors.
Anyway, let's not turn this thread into a comparison between oranges and oranges. Congratulations, Nan. Your 11-16mm lens looks pretty sweet.

Imitation is one of the finest forms of flattery. It is what is under the hood that counts. The Tokina 11-16mm out of the factory box in my opinion is a variable prime with image shift/jump during focus pulls.. The Duclos 11-16mm is a true zoom meeting cinema standards. That I know. The Nan's performance may be equal to Duclos for zoom tracking and image centering, or anywhere in between a Duclos and a stock Tokina. The proof of the pudding is when the image gets projected on a large screen.

I'll elaborate.

When you buy a Duclos lens, you don't just get the lens (though in this case, having used the lens all over the world I think it is outstanding) you also get a company for whom customer service is very important and for whom a deep level of physical craftsmanship is part of the tradition of a family owned and operated business.

That they are American my be meaningful or not in a chauvinistic sense, but that they are in actually here in our country means ease of use in terms of location, language and culture. Russian business culture, for instance, is very different than American business culture (not in a good way). All of these things add up when dealing with professional equipment that you are going to depend upon. Of course, like everybody else, I own things that are made in China that are very good.

But even if Nan's lens were the functional equal of the Duclos lens, all of these other factors apply.

I have Canon Ti mount + Tokina 11-16 eos ....
Canon Ti Mount - $2000 , Tokina 11-16 ( eos ) - $599 = 2599 and I can remotelly manage AF and Iris from REDMOTE with info about lens status in R3D ... Perfect !!!
Now only PL fanatic can pay for Tokina PL modificated lens over $3000...
Really .. Best deal is RED Canon Ti + any canon eos lens ...
Save Your money ....

Spoken like a true gentleman.

I have not noticed any vignetting on the wide angle from the hood; however I will take a closer look. Regarding the lens mechanics, the focus ring is reasonably smooth and light but you do feel a very minor roughness as you rotate the ring, which may diminish with repeated use of the lense; the focus ring rotates about 60-70 degrees. The zoom ring is smooth and lighter than the RED 18-50. The aperture ring is a little tighter but also smooth.

From their sight:

"Duclos Lenses has developed a conversion process for the Tokina 11-16mm ultra-wide angle lens. Most obvious is the PL mount that interfaces with any PL mount camera including the RED One. More subtle yet most important is the activated manual aperture control. Lubricated, geared, and marked, the new aperture ring allows precise control for the user. The outer shell of the lens has been replaced with black anodized aluminum. Internal components are refined and reenforced. The final product is a small, lightweight lens perfectly capable of holding it’s own against the likes of other motion picture optics. Now also available in Canon Eos and Nikon F mount."

First, my praise of Duclos is offered as a happy customer. To me, "engineering" is anything added or altered that makes something work well... seamlessly. The Duclos lens is just that. The optics are essentially Tokina, but the rebuild is extensive and smooth as silk... worth every dollar. I have traveled to, and worked, in China, Korea, Japan and Malaysia and have shot extraordinary technology and skill in every one of these countries. As far as I'm concerned, we're all equal on this planet. Duclos simply makes a very good lens. I only hope that someone else... anywhere... can match their quality. I believe it's just a very personal thing for the Duclos team to do a great job.
