I've posted a quick review on PanaScout, Panavision's new iPhone app, on my blog:

Hope you find it useful and informative!

Cheers,

Bought it, like it, agree with Paul's write up about the zoom simulating different focal lengths and the features they should add to it. But for now, I think its cool and I like where its going.

I really like Artemis directors vf- mainly because you can pick the camera format before hand and it has a library of most focal length lenses and lens brands. It even has all of Red's shooting modes in it- along with fullframe, 2/3", anamorphic, ect... A bit pricey at $30 but saves so much time and its always in your pocket.

Hunter...

A reviewer said this about Artemis Directors Viewfinder:

Because it can't properly display wide angle lenses I find its use very restricted. I also compared it to our Super 35 - 1.85 Arricam with Cooke S4 Lenses and the viewfinder's field of view was wider than the camera's.

Do you find this to be the case as well when comparing with your lenses?

Bought it. It's decent. Will use. Too expensive though.

Please tell me you're kidding. It's 12 BUCKS, for cryin' out loud. How many things have you bought over the last few years that were far less useful and 10 times the price?

Jeez, it's gotten to the point where anything that's not free is "too expensive." How a capitalist society survives on such a mindset is beyond me.

You're Right. It's all relative with iPhone Apps. I should have said overpriced for an iPhone app instead of too expensive.

It's well worth the $12 and much better ROI than the Red Cheese Plate. :)

Hey Michael-

Regarding Artemis, As long as you pick the correct format + lens, everything seems to be dead on accurate- ive tried anamorphic Red, 5Dmark2, 2/3" and 3-perf super35 with no problems at all.

It does have a sorta quirk with very wide angle lenses, becuase your limited by how wide you can see with the iphone, on really wide angle focal lengths there are black bars on the left and right side with expand the wider you get- but often you dont even need to use super wides so its no big deal and it still gives you a reference for fov. I think its worth $30- this app and sunseeker make scouting a breeze.

Thanks Hunter.

I bought both. Sun Seeker doesn't seem to allow you to find data for another location. Have you tried Helios Sun Position for that? I know it's $29.99 but seems like it does a lot more than Sun Seeker and let's you define the location, overlay maps and etc.

Thoughts?

I havent used the helios app- honestly, all I do with the sun seeker is put it in camera "augmented reality" sorta mode and just look where the sun will be at a later time (for timelapse or to imagine natural light for a windowed location at sunrise/sunset)- I will check that app out though, thanks for the tip.
