  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Forget everything you know about the compression ratio from MX sensor. Dragon will have very different results.

Dragon will compress way better since it'll have less noise... but if the image itself is full of noise (trees, grass, gravel etc.) there is no magic formula that will preserve an image entirely composed of high detail.

Hmmm "please be at 1000 fps, pretty please...." ;)

I doubt it'll be that high, but I'd be happy for say 400 even...very very happy...even if the redcode wasn't 3 to 1

Ok... well I just went ahead and ordered the MX. Hopefully it'll come long before July so that I can get a pre-order in on the Dragon too. A pitch for your Monday meeting would be to allow pre-orders for the Dragon before you've received your epic shipment. Also a strong vote for shipping Epics soon. The sooner we get our Epics the sooner we'll be able to make some extra rentals off of them and the sooner we can afford an Epic upgrade. So the sooner you get them the more likely people (well at least I) will be upgrading to Dragon. ;)

Trust me, as soon as we are ready, we will kick it off.

I hope to get more clarity from the RED team next week. I really appreciate the upgrade programs but have not jumped in yet. One thing I'd like to know (when and if the RED team knows)

1) How long do you expect we'll be without our Scarlet trade-ins before we get an Epic X upgrade shipped? i.e. what's the turnaround time?

I realize nothing is set in stone, but it would be nice to know an estimate. Thanks.

red team please answer me one question... when you can

whats the max fps for scarlet dragon at 1k ws (tentatively as in I know things change)....thanks!
Not RED team, but looking at how the framerate scales from 5K WS to 2K WS, I would say the Scarlet-D will max out at 200 fps for 1K WS.

i hope they lock this topic, they already answered these questions many times

Hi Jason,

I hope the RED Team takes a good break over the weekend. I had a similar question. Brent answered it, see Quote below (from Page 85 of this thread)

The time when it starts at all is missing, but Brent mentioned a few post above "Trust me, as soon as we are ready, we will kick it off".

Have a nice weekend

Sassi

Warranty or no warranty, the effort to eval is the same. A voided warranty will come across our QC benches at some point : )

But, yes, less time if under warranty because the customer communication to collect repair funds (if needed) is moot. And, yes, dropping off saves you some transit time.

A few hours? Nope, that is pretty aggressive. There are going to be other people in line as well. Hence, the estimated timeframe of 7-10 business days is what it is. By dropping off, not going to shave days and days of of that.

Sorry if this has already been addressed......... But is there an early adopter pricing for scarlet owners?
Probably asking to late since I already pull trigger for the scarlet D preorder.

For European Customers
Can you send any Scarlet to Red Europe to ship to the USA for upgrading ?
and if so would Red give a single price inclusive of shipping for customers.

It would make sense for European customers looking to upgrade not to have to
worry about import duties, taxes etc.. Just one price... It could also reduce shipping costs
to ship a number of cameras together in monthly batches, with a cut off date
of say the 31st of every month for each batch of upgrades.
Just a thought

I believe they've said if you bought your camera from Red Europe and it's going in for an upgrade, just send it to Red Europe and they'll sort out getting to the USA and back and then back to you.
If it's a upgrade to a Epic-X or Epic-Dragon, they just swap your camera from the stock in the UK.

will RED sell Scarlet dragon for new costumers that have no scarlet yet ? (if so , i guess it will happen later on ?)

thanks

I was wondering the same thing. I talked to a bomb squad rep and they said they were not going to be selling the scarlet with the dragon sensor, they only offered the upgrade.

AS I ponder which way to go still. I put the numbers (table) together to help me visualize. In deciding who has the edge, I make some assumption so PLEASE feel free to disagree with my conclusions. PS: I still not completely sure, although definitely leaning the Epic route

Don't want to nitpick here, but for EPIC the framerates should be:

5FF - 96
5K 2.4:1 - 120

The other framerates are all for 2.4:1 as far as I can see (for the scarlet). And I know the actual framerates for 2K on the EPIC (no 2.4:1) is 303. I'd have to doublecheck as well but there are no 2.4:1 mode for anything on the EPIC other than the5K 2.4:1 mode. But I haven't used the latest firmware yet.

Yeah, and I believe Scarlet 5k FF is up to 48fps and 5k 2.40:1 is up to 60fps. Basically the FPS for Scarlet Dragon seems to be Epic MX Max / 2.

These frame rates may improve... Very likely.

I pulled the trigger on Scarlet-D. I could not see myself needing to tell a story with more than 48fps at 5K, and love the idea of having higher DR + sensitivity. 6K can be a very far-off future goal, but for now, I would like to build up my work and clientele with 5K Dragon :D

It shouldn`t be a win for EPIC MX on the item, HDR, since Jarred has stated HDR is staying (unless it`s been stated that is staying on EPIC only).

With HDR enabled, Scarlet should achieve 22+ stops of DR...

now this is why im on the fence :)

until I see proof I cant really pull the trigger.

I am leaning towards the EPIC.
