  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- RED MOTION MOUNT

4 stops with Global shutter on and 8 in ND only mode. you can set the ND to increment/decrement in almost any fraction you want. I'd recommend setting a quick key for "Minimum ND" in case you're stuck at a lot of ND and want to get back to the lower end quickly. There is .43 ND (in optical density) when the mount is on the camera, which may not be a bad thing for a lot of situations.

Thanks Jason. I'm lazy so I will ask what does .43 ND = in stops? 1 and some change, but what is the change?

Here is a screenshot of the menu for the motion mount. Still a few items to tweak but gives you the general idea. Jason since he is swinging one around now can post later what everything does. And obviously you can map whatever hard buttons you want to controls so you can have your handle rocker etc. modify ND valules etc on the fly without going into the menus.

Much appreciated. Now you've got me curious and thinking.

I've been saving my rocker on my DSMC Side Handle just for this.

Also fascinating. So I'd imagine for those who desire Global Shutter control at all times for all lighting conditions across a broad range there's a reason to keep a standard set of .3, .6, and .9 NDs in the kit still just in case.

Off the top of my noggin, I believe that's about 1.3 stops as your base loss with the Motion Mount attached.

Okay, I can't wait for this MM PL or Canon, so much shooting to do on the Beach that this is going to be a perfect solution in making my MB super light, with no Stages, just the MB and the 138 Circular Polarizer rotating Tray... Just Beautiful... Global Shutter... Icing on the cake.

Jarred, your guys haven't forgot how to take money from my RED account have they?... ;)

The Mount reads out on screen as 1.44 :)

Yeah, I'm very interested to see how the Mounts ND combines with Pola's and Standard ND's in the mattebox.

That menu.... drool!

I can honestly say I will not be putting my camera firmware back to 4.x.x if I can help it, I have fallen in love with the changes and improvements in 5.x.x in mere hours.

It is polarized.. but since it is linear you can still use Circular polarizer and get the normal effect that the circular polarizer gives you on a standard camera. If you want for some reason to completely remove the polarization , you can add a quarter wave plate in front.

that is amazing...or the way it should be:) canon please!

I'll take mine in EF please! In the meantime, can we talk about what's hiding in that "Lens" option?

Thanks Jason.

Also, if the ND is polarized, does this mean that if I were to roll the camera, so as to make the horizon not horizontal,
that the reflections in water would go in and out of being more or less attenuated. (I hope this ? makes sense?)

Damn. You guys got me curious. Actually before I zip off to dinner another quicky question came to mind.

@Jason or Jarred - Can we get a brief summary of what each "Shutter Type" provides?

Soft Shutter: opens and closes in a Sine Wave
Square Shutter: Opens and closes on/off

I'm picturing the Soft Shutter to approximate a spinning mirror as light "fades" in and out of exposure. There's def way more technical dudes here than I am So I will not even try to explain certain things as I come across them but describe them as I understand them.

Not sure, but I can see if I can try it before I have to give the mount back.

Ah. I know exactly what that's all about, just didn't understand the naming convention. There's a white paper on that whole thing with great example imagery I'll have to dig up. Any in frame blur or camera movement induced blur should have a nice smooth look to it rather than the typical "darted blast" feel. Action scenes, whip pans, tracking shots, etc... should look lovely if that's the look you enjoy.

I got a robotic head handy and I think that I can demonstrate that on pan back to back at some point.
