  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Am I the only one that never had a problem with camera noise? When I am indoors I just set the fan lower when rolling and higher when I stop. I've never shot interviews indoors with really long takes or anything like that so maybe that's why...
That's exactly why.

A few "small" questions, but:

1) Will all new cameras shipping form today on include the new fan?
2) Will the new fan be automatically put on to the Dragon upgraded Epic bodies?
3) If I upgrade Scarlet to Epic, will the new unit have the new fan?

Answers to 2) and 3) below.

Day 2 thoughts:
First up an answer to a few questions out there. I caught Jarred in between probably 15 different meetings, but I did get some important questions answered ...

Q: In the Dragon cameras or upgraded cameras do we get the new DSMC FAN 2.0?
A: Nope. That is an optional upgrade for those who desire it.
...

Are there any technical differences between those options or is it just the logo and color? And shouldn't there be a 4th option for Dragon Scarlet? ;)

Going to order this as soon as i have made my decision about which upgrade-path i'll take. Hehe

Not trying ti complaint here but I think Red should aim to get noise level down below 15db. Above 20db is loud and noisy, any sound guys would agree with me on this

That's exactly why.

I do long interviews all the time. I usually stop at 30 minutes anyway to swap mags (even with larger mags I'm not a fan of running an entire interview on one set of media without backups) and the quick change time allows for camera cool down, for people to take a sip of water or whatever. I've never had a sound issue except when I forgot to change the fan speed to manual.

The noise floor is so low that underneath any music or other track, it's so unnoticeable. When it is noticeable, like a quiet moment, Adobe Audition fixes that in a snap. The key is keeping the fan speed consistent during dialogue. Changing it between questions is fine because they are different sound prints for a segment. May not work for all people, but it works for me and I've never had a camera overheat, even in small rooms with tungsten lights.

Addition: I've also never had a sound person - or client, more importantly - complain.

Another vote for some guidance on whether the EPIC fan kit fits the Scarlet brain. I'm going to execute my Scarlet before too long so would rather just buy one fan kit now.

Thanks

Good question. Seems like the only difference may be the graphics but I'd rather not be $450 wrong.

I'm about to buy (or let's rather say reserve) the upgrade kit but I'm totally unsure about the top fan with the info available!

Front fan -> no problem, everything fine (should even work with my 15mm rod-support - I've looked into that)...

But top fan; We have a WC top plate (Easy Top X);

And in addition we have an antenna range extender installed;
http://www.plcelectronicsolutions.com/products/Range-Extender-for-Red-Epic(tm)-.html

So right now I have no clue if I'm able to use/install the new top fan?!?

Any additional word/info from RED on this topic?
I'd appreciate it (just for me to know weather to buy the full kit or only the front fan)!

Thanks in advance! :)

I don't think the WC 15mm Rod support does fit with the new front fan.

ok... I thought it might work...

but that's exactly why it would be good to have some more (official) infos from RED; like the dimensions or a list of 3rd party accessory that works (or not)! It's a "on-sale" product (even if not available right now -> I can buy it at this moment) without ANY information (and to be honest; not the only product where I see this lack of information or this lack of "full specification" happening)...

+1 on the 15mm LW adapter + top plate question (3rd party manufacturers are very welcome to chime in...)

Regrading the db's:
I like to work with equal stand-by and shooting settings, so nobody can hear when the camera is turned on or off.
Currently I get away with 35%/35% even for hour long takes (sensor temp staying at around 62°C at +/-20°C room temp & redcode 6:1).

From the diagram Phil reposted on page 2 it seems that 25%/25% might be possible, but I'm not quite sure.

And: how much power do the extra fans need?

Honestly, i think all what RED really has to care about is making sure their own accessories work. Come on, you can't seriously expect from them to provide a list of compatible 3rd-party-products. Telling you if those products work or not is the job of those companies. And for that it would be great to have the exact measurements, thats right. But i'm sure RED doesn't hold back those infos, when such a company asks for them.

I see your point - and I agree... But since there is totally no info available at the moment (even from 3rd parties) I'd just say they didn't receive samples or approval by RED until now? I don't ask for a complete list from RED (too many accessories out in the wild, but just to think of it; most of the better brands should be officially "RED approved")... But an estimate when we can expect some infos from the companies would help upon decision of the timing of a potential purchase.

+1 For $9500 a fan upgrade could be included ;)

I don't get this logic. If the price was $10000 you'd still want something thrown in as it feels like a bargain. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with haggling but when it comes to the upgrade fee, none of us have a single other thing to compare this to for value. There are so few posts on these upgrade forums about the effort and cost to RED of the trade in programme.

I've ordered a kit for the Epic, which will work with my Scarlet in the mean time.
