I'm still dizzy from the loudness of the techno music at the booth Monday afternoon! Jesus, guys... turn it down. The new products are cool and all, but it's hard to evaluate them when the floor is vibrating at an 8.0 quake level. (And I saw some very nasty stares from the Quantel people across the corridor, who were wincing a lot.)I’m almost dizzy with excitement at all of the goodies Jim and Jarred (and Graeme) have offered up this NAB.
So it's been quiet for the build up to NAB... but BAM! This is such an exciting time to be a Red owner/user... I was a reluctant Red One shooter... grumpy and complaining... And I wrestled with how to make that camera perform how I wanted it to… But it also taught me something about the future to come… THEN, Epic changed everything. And bare in mind, that camera is STILL the camera we are all in love with. But Red's design philosophy, modularity and constant upgrading/improving both on the hardware, firmware and software levels has now reached such a critical mass that it's staggering to look at the global picture that is presented today. For me, the Carbon Dragon and all of the modules/options is the single most versatile, powerful, lightweight camera that also happens to offer the best picture and highest resolution of any camera working in the motion picture arena.
Anyone who complains about the Red cameras of today simply has NOT done their homework and are fucking LAZY. Period. I don't care who you are and how great your career level is, or how many awards you have... If you don't understand a technology, fucking LEARN IT before bashing it. I read these forums every day to stay abreast of what's going on in our ever changing landscape. I HAVE TO. It's my job as a cinematographer and like it or not, we are now ALL digital cinematographers if we want to work today.
SO complain all you want and cling to inferior, dummied down camera technologies if it somehow makes your lack of understanding of digital less obvious. But those who want the best out of their images and with the most malleable system offered, I suggest you invest in yourself and really LEARN how the digital cameras out there truly function. And then I promise you, you will come to the same conclusion that the Dragon camera is simply unbeatable.
I’m almost dizzy with excitement at all of the goodies Jim and Jarred (and Graeme) have offered up this NAB. For me this is the most significant NAB yet for Red, since we now have Dragons available in the field. Last year, we had the promise of the camera and that was enticing, but today we HAVE the cameras and are only stoking the fires even higher with more options, functions and finesse.
Bravo Red.
I haven't found a definitive answer yet, but I'm wondering if brand new non-carbon Epic Dragons will be shipping during the upgrade process still?
What is a rough timeline when that might begin? Just a curious Drangon fevered (hopeful buyer) from the outside looking in![]()
June is looking pretty good for us to catch up with Epic-M upgrades
Does this mean Epic-X upgrades could begin late June?
The ramp up plan is going extremely well, as you probably noticed the number of cameras being upgraded on a daily basis are much more than there was a month ago. Our manufacturing team are looking like rockstars right now.
June is looking pretty good for us to catch up with Epic-M upgrades and for the Aluminum Dragon-Ms to start shipping on-demand if things continue to go well.
