  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - SCARLET DRAGON

A thought about this pricing... I think we Scarlet owners have enjoyed a pretty good ride with our cameras holding their value probably better than Epic. But that can't last forever. I think this pricing indicates the reality that the Scarlet price will slide a little with all the new competition (real or perceived).

I was planning on trading up to Epic but now that the Scarlet Dragon looks real (maybe?), it's thinkers. Seems to me that the options are all pretty good: keep old Scarlet (or sell) and buy Scarlet Dragon for $14,500, or trade Scarlet for Epic (can always buy Scarlet Dragon when you have more need/funds - or trade upgrade to full Dragon), or just upgrade to Scarlet Dragon - simple and quick with no haggling and transfer fees.

All good options IMO.

Not that I'd ever trade my Carbon Dragon... but this is the best deal for a camera on the planet!

Scarlet Dragon

6K FF: 12 fps
5K FF: 48
4K FF: 60
3K FF: 75
2K FF: 120

5K 2.4:1: 60
4K 2.4:1: 75
3K 2.4:1: 100
2K 2.4:1: 150

Great!
I hope Burst modes allow for even higher numbers.
In other words I hope burst mode is not needed for any of the above specs.

Ahh that's better. You have my attention again. Would like to know what FF implies. I am a little confused by this. Waiting for you to land.

OK sorry guys.. I can see now why people are sideways as my specs didn't line up last night.

Quick post so you guys don't jump off the bridge but RED.COM will have the proper updated specs shortly.

The charts get bit confusing now with the new Burst modes in different formats and the Broadcast options but this is a good guide below.

My apologies... I fucked that one up. The specs did change on the max compression ratios, more to come later.

Scarlet Dragon

6K FF: 12 fps
5K FF: 48
4K FF: 60
3K FF: 75
2K FF: 120

5K 2.4:1: 60
4K 2.4:1: 75
3K 2.4:1: 100
2K 2.4:1: 150

FF means "full frame" but in this case it actually means 5120x2700... Which is actually 1.9:1 aspect ratio (for DCP/Cinema delivery).

Still no 4.5k love for Scarlet, huh?! (or does Scarlet Dragon have the "custom window" mode)?

Regarding the modes:
6K FF: 12 fps
5K FF: 48
4K FF: 60
3K FF: 75
2K FF: 120

Are these modes really FF or is it like the old days with crop factor?

Thanks

Ulrik

5K FF is cropped in from 6K FF, yes. Just like Scarlet 4K was cropped in on Epic 5K.

I am super excited!!

OK, a few questions after reading all the posts.

The biggest factor for me will be time. Does anyone know when the upgrade program will come to an end?

Are the frame rates listed "burst mode", or are they the normal continuous frame rates? I am a little confused about everything. (Either way EXCITED!)

I love the Scarlet with the MX sensor, I cannot wait until I can afford to upgrade and take the next step. I just recently shot some helicopter footage with a Nikon D4 wishing I would have had my Scarlet running HDRx, then in the back of my mind envying the Dragon owners. I have rarely "broke" the MX sensors dynamic range, but I have a couple times. (Usually in aircraft.) With the increased frame rate and the dynamic range and the low light noise level I have to say who would not want this camera. Granted, the Epic will always be a better camera, but for the price, the Scarlet Dragon is the camera to beat. (The Scarlet Dragon vs. the Alexa anyone?)

I understand, but is it still crop factor:
5K = 1.3
4K = 1.62
3K = 2.17
2K = 3.25

?

Thanks

Ulrik

Compared to FULL FRAME, Dragon Scarlet @5K has bit wider FOV than MX Scarlet @4K, but still tighter than Epic MX 5K.

To get the 1.3 crop on Dragon, you'd need to be at 5.5K on an Epic Dragon.

Dragon 6K is even wider FOV than that.

My understanding is crop factor of Dragon Scarlet (5K) is same as Scarlet MX (4K) - so in the 1.6 range, yes.

Ok, thanks, then the Epic is still the one for me with the price and high frame rates in mind ;)

Crop factor is a very relative term. You always need what you refer it to. I assume you mean FF 35 still camera format?
This tool will nonetheless answer all your questions, you just have to dial in what your reference frame is, first.

And yes, Scarlet and Dragon have the same sensor.

Yes, the sensor is cropped more and more as you change the resolution from 6KFF -> 5K FF -> 4K FF -> ...
It seems that the FF reference confuses you?

Consider FF just as a reference of the horizontal/vertical picture ratio. In RED terminology FF represents picture ratio of 6144 (h) x 3160 (v) = 1,94:1 ratio
RED FF format doesn't mean the "known" FF from DSLR's.

Anyway 5K FF doesn't mean that picture is recorded in the FF size and then scaled to 5K. With 5K FF you will get a smaller field of view then with 6K FF.
Same way 5K HD means a reference to the picture aspect ratio of 16:9 or 1,77 :1

Also 6K FF on RED has a smaller field of view then FF DSLR.
