  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - REDLINK DEVELOPMENT KIT

i dont think i need RedLink at the moment, but it is so cheap i feel like i should buy it anyway otherwise ill be missing out on something :D
Hopefully Kessler does something with this for their CineDrive system so we can use Epic on our next stopmotion project instead of 5D

I did get a chance to play with this system. The focus from the THC was very smooth at first look. Long focus pulls showed a slight amount of stepping and watching the distance window on the lens revealed a bit of robotic movement. Should be fine on most web stuff and lighter "keeping the subject in" but I would need to test it more before using it for any large screen work with longer pulls. I tried the 85 1.2 there and also my 24-70. The 24-70 had a slight bit more stepiness so I imagine it would be different for each lens.

One of the guys mentioned that one antenna on the red link was RF and one wifi, he also mentioned that the wifi was open to development but the RF was specifically for the red mote. Can anyone clarify this as I think Jarred had mentioned the wireless focus was open to 3rd parties as well.

I too too have been following this improvement very closely and I'm very excited about it. A smaller 2 channel remote would be fantastic, something that would be mountable to rods or handles so we could use it in a hand held solo operator mode will make me jump on this quick! Hard stops and no more gears make this incredible! No motors, no wires, no gears, sharp fast glass. Thanks Red!

What? The Redmote can link to the Redlink? I gotta go quick to the trash bin and retrieve my Redmote before the haulers pick up the trash!

Just joking... there are no trash haulers where I live. '-)

The REDmote will only connect to the wireless in the brain, not the REDLINK bridge. There is an additional RF receiver in the REDLINK bridge that talks to the THC.

rats!

Interesting, the steppiness may just be part of the early implementation. Canon lenses (especially wider ones like the 24-70) only have so many steps so there may need to be a slight amount of feathering programmed in. Nikon G series lenses have about 2-3x as many steps BTW :P

In addition to the 2CH THC I'd love to see a Redlink Pro with a built in single channel WMD that could work in concert with the current THC to give a single motor for Zoom control as well as the built in Focus/Iris control of the G/EF lens. Add module/battery support to the rear and this would allow three axis control in a super compact package.

Truly genuis idea allowing third parties to develop the functionality of this device. A concept that hasn't hurt Apple and their iphone. BUT I hope the images I am seeing are prototypes. As has already been pointed out the majority of users have batteries directly mounted on the back of their cameras and the Redlink does not have a mount on the back making it the default final module. Unsure if mounting the battery on the back of the Redlink would affect RF performance but the antennas on top would still be clear? In my case without the ability to mount to the back of the Redlink I would need to purchase a new camera rig assembly making Redlink no longer a good value purchase. Please Red make the Redlink more along the lines of an inline module like the Plus One Module.

Again, the GIG-E and CTRL ports are also open to development. Not saying RED won't make a different module, but there's no reason why anyone couldn't attach their own wireless bridge to the GIG-E or CTRL port.

would be super cool to see another protocol used such as 5.8Ghz or 900mhz for Multicopter long range control of the camera. Wifi is great for regular control but can interfere with the flight controller of a multi rotor.

A quick Google search yields a bunch of results for rs-232 to either of those...

I don't understand why the Redlink was designed such that it's not possible to hang an additional module on the back of it. I'm thinking primarily of a battery, of course.

I also want to note that, although people seem to make a sport of putting down the Redmote, it's always worked for me and I've found it very useful.

Yeah so what's up, I thought the Optitron made canon lenses perfectly useable with the internal focus gears, but it never really became a known available product. So now somebody can write a simple program, we buy the red hand controller, and we can use canon lenses with wireless focus with no motor?

THIS IS HUGE, why is no one really talking about this? Am I missing something?

Heh heh Augusto, sorry you misread my intention.. it wasn't to slash at you all, and nobody from RED is mad at you. I can see how you took it that way since I quoted your post and I do apologize if it felt that way.

Your question is the number one question we have received about the Kit and it is a very valid one, I was using your post to make a point of emphasizing development being the primary nature of the product since many overlook the fact.

We are all family here.. and as such the responses here are more casual rather than professional.... and that goes both ways.

I'll go trash that post since it obviously came out wrong.

Just a thought, but if we hung a Wifi Bridge -> Ethernet we could mount that anywhere on the camera could we not?

http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Unive...F8&qid=1397373849&sr=1-8&keywords=wifi+bridge

+ P-Tap -> USB plug for power. Then we wouldn't have to deal with it blocking our V-Mounts and could velcro the Netgear anywhere we wanted. It's just a shame that a single ethernet plug on the Epic costs as much as a module. It could have given us a nice $50 solution. Anyone making Epic ethernet cables on the cheap?

Yes indeed Gavin.. Few people have cobbled something similar together.

Gavin
Just make sure any ethernet adapter you plan on using is able to do GIG-E speed and not only 100/10 as the camera can only connect if it is a GIG-E /1000 link.
