  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - IMAX 6K 70mm projection is up

I think this could be quite a step forward for large venue "event" films if they could create IMAX quality images with our little Dragons... Saw some prelim tests of this and it is bloody cool....


Just do not tell Nolan or Wally Pfister....
 
Glad I checked it out!! Last thing we did before heading back to LA. Aerials were extremely impressive, I thought I could see kids in the bus windows.

Was curious though as to why the 2k reel wasn't scaled up?

We were told in our screening that it was to compare the traditional 2k size with the 4K size...
 
I would have liked to see the 4K reel played 3 seperate times at 2K Full Screen. (Not windowed), 4K projection and IMAX. That would have been telling. I thought showing 2K scaled down was a bit odd and if it filled the screen then we could have seen the resolution difference. We know 2K is smaller but if we were going by that accord than 4K should have not taken up the full screen either, only IMAX. And, I realize the point is to make the 2K feel very underwhelming but I'm not sure that's quite fair compared to the other two projections when 2K has been filling 40ft screens for years. Just appeared to be an odd choice.
Anyhow, it was cool to see the 70mm IMAX presentation, just wish the film was a lot less cutty so you could actually focus on the images a bit more and was a mix of different lighting conditions ie day exteriors, night exteriors, etc. Again I think if the 4K reel was printed to IMAX would have been more telling.

Oh, strange, must have missed that. I was right behind the projector at the back and when it started up I think I turned cause you could definitely hear it. Perhaps I missed that. Apologies. I actually think in retrospect the 4K Sony projection of Dragon footage was the most eye opening for sure. It was crisp, vivid and had a visual depth that is almost similar to the 3D experience, but better IMO.
 
If we had the time we would of loved to film out everything to 70mm.... That would of been terrific.
 
Any chance to make it also available at least in 4K for non RedRay owners, just like Tattoo?

The screening is a must see at the show. They built a full theater for this thing, it's quite awesome. But after watching everything I actually preferred the digital image over the IMAX image. I thought I'd never say that, but the digital was just so much cleaner, sharper, and vivid.
