  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2013..

The flux capacitor is coming! How about an official Scarlet upgrade path announcement? Seems like a much easier thing to nail down.....

NAB 2013 will be historic... mark my words.

Jim

A new Red camera that is made for 3D out of the box with two PL mounts in special mirroring mount and two Dragon sensors making it the first camera in the world to shoot 3D at 6K without any 3D rig or special equipment needed, all streaming data through a new version of the Meizler module that is capable of streaming R3D directly to a RAID-storage that is connected to a computer with Adobe Premiere and a special plugin for realtime editing of data still being written to the RAID.

Then there's some news about the projector I hope? :)

ironically there are things that were shown and announced at NAB 2012 that are still not out... so I've learn to keep my expectation and excitement down. ;)

But as soon as we read about those new things the excitement will go up again, even yours, no matter how long it will take until we have the products in our hands. ;)

Would be cool if there was a way to alter acquisition framerates while shooting. Have your project timebase at say, 59.94, but vary the sensor output anywhere from 23.98 to 59.94 in realtime depending on what you're shooting. Use accelerometers for feedback; whip pan causes fps to jump to 60, once accelerometers settle down fps goes back to 23.98. Any sensor output rate other than 59.94 would of course require duplication of frames....... I'm sure you guys are working on this already.

While this could surely be nothing short of incredible, the only way it could would be if the limitation of a single camera for 3D is if the mechanics within allow for the two Lens mounts to move independently, as to allow full control of both the Convergence and Inter Ocular control, of course such a camera that could indeed one day allow for this, would have to be as big as 3 Epic cameras put together, at at likely retail price of "6 to 10" Epic cameras, as not only would this camera need to have the Lens mount system to be independently controllable in its movements, but also the sensor would need to be on a sliding tilting plate.

Then there are many more considerations which are much more technical, but all said and done if this 3D Camera was indeed to come to light, I would be first in line to ditch 3D rigs... But never at the price of loosing the control that a current Beam Splitter 3D rig offers, as side by side is just nothing of interest... ;)

At the end of the day however we are still talking about a side by side 3D system, that no matter how advanced still offers its limitations...

What I have been pondering at is actually the same concept, but with twin independently controlled Sensors to one single lens, were are the sensors inside the camera and no the lens/es via the cameras movement to produce the Convergence and Interocular adjustments amongst an array of calculations done internally by the camera via direct input, similar to how you would control Iris electronically when using Canon lenses, now that would be a braking thru technology worth its weight in gold... ;)

I wonder if a new Red Full Frame camera (24X36mm) is still in minds of Jim and the rest of the Red team. I think that photographers would be a good market niche to exploit.

I think that the main keys should be: hybrid camera (stills and motion),RAW recording (for both stills and motion),24x36mm sensor(with FF 3:2 image coverage plus crop options like APS-C),lighter body than the Epic/Scarlet,usable flash sync port, the same interchangeable mount options as the Epic/Scarlet, good dynamic range&ISO (a Dragon FF version?), at least 6k sensor image that would produce a non alliased image. Not like the video function of the HDSLR's. Even the 1DC is the shit because its image produces a huge banding on shadows because the compression,we did some tests with it:

We where very disappointed about the poor quality that we got from "the best hdslr"... that is because that i think that Red could do a much round product than the Canon's offering

Would love to be there and hopefully can pop up for few days but I am shooting my first Red Epic feature Documentary about René Redzepi, chef of NOMA the best restaurant in the world for the last 3 consecutive years and starting shooting next friday until November this year. Quiet exciting. The film as already been invited to make it's world premiere during the 2014 International Berlin film festival that will take place in February 2014....

Just working out my schedule for NAB 2013.
Is there another link or topic about the REDucation option at NAB?
I see that its offered in the SMART PASS.
Its there for two days at 10am to 7pm.
Are we allowed to bring our own camera?
Many questions :)

I take it we'll see an RSVP thread soon with all the info for NAB?

so glad it's not the same weekend as Coachella, I don't want to choose just one! Trying to aim for both....I love April =)

I'd like to be in and out of Vegas since it's gonna be a gnarly week for me. Any info will help for planning as we begin to inch closer to the dates.

been out of the reduser loop for a sec but it seems to be rather quite, I guess it's the calm before the storm.

I have the most respect for Red and what you've done to the industry in the short 6 years, god I'd still be shooting soft ass 1080p if it wasn't for my Scarlet LOL.

Been loving House of Cards, Epic 5K w/MasterPrimes is a very beautiful thing. Any chance you can get Fincher to shoot something with Dragon to show off at NAB? Dude has been on fire this month, I can't get enough of his work.

Drat! I was only half-way through the new NAB thread Jim started before it vanished before my very eyes. Didn't read the last post so I don't know if the thread was removed because of what someone said or if it is just new policy that Jim's threads have a short shelf-life. Nothing specific in it other than saying that NAB would be more about what is available NOW rather than so much of what is being worked on for the future (although some of that was probably going to be touched on.) It seemed to be an update of sorts on the progress of the Red Player, Dragon, and other things they've been working on without offering specifics. Just saying that NAB would be about product available NOW! Any way, it does give us a specific time to realize expectations.
