I re-scheduled a shoot for tomorrow so I could geek out here this morning...
Pathetic I tell you!!!

I can see the scene in my head, (9:00 the floodgates open, and BAM, cut to slow motion, people running full out, with all the extra skin doing all the weird natural wave motions than you see in high-speed footage on, say, the discovery channel, people skidding out on turns between booths, .... I'm just trying to figure out what music its cut to. and whats the catch,? there isn't actually a booth this year, jokes on the ticket holders.

/cries

I think you should go classy and throw there Chariots of fire from Vangelis... Would be great countereffect por all the blood, ninja doubleflips and tears...

What's going to happen to the returned Red 1's?

What's going to happen to the returned Red 1's?

For all of us who are just about to receive a Red One, here is a question that just bothers me to no end now: What will Red/Jim do with the Red One bodies that are being exchanged for Epics? Are we going to see factory refurbished Red Ones for ½ price by the beginning of next year?

This is a very confusing move.

It completely undoes the mystique of the Red One camera - build 16 should have seen the camera finished but now it seems that Epic will finish Red One - to be continued in the next series.

The message it sends out is that RED have lost confidence in Red One and it's promise of obsolescence. The problems with Red are not going to solved by more resolution, more data, more changes...

However, 6lbs is a very nice weight - how much, did you say?

Welcome to the world of digital technology!
I have lived with new computers replacing last year's wonders for the last 42 years. The way to avoid obsolesence is to do like IBM do, and Hewlett-Packard used to do before they lost their direction. Every new model is backwards compatible. In IBMs case to the point that this year's new offerings can run programs that were written for the first 360 (and actually do in some places).

I think the Epic is a nice and logical step forward - a new high-end model which will use the accessories and workflow of the ONE. Next year, maybe an 8k 24x36mm camera to do for 70mm what they are already doing for s35?

Remember that it is long since NHK first demoed "quad HD" television. The world is not standing still.

Workflow, Workflow, workflow!!!

I hope there's going to be news about RED RAD, 4k 16x9 support, audio support etc. Anyone?? Wait until the 16'th? :cold:

Many of us have been pushing for a professional, rentable, rock-solid version of the Red One. A camera with proper connectors, and professional inputs, outputs and formats. The Epic is that camera. I don't think it's going to be a replacement for Red One, I suspect it will compete more directly with the Sony and Panasonic professional cameras, probably selling in the 40K to 60K range.

Red has done an amazing job with the Red one. They packed a ridiculous amount of value into a $18000 camera. Nobody expected them to stop there, did they? Epic will be a Red for the high-end professional market - the kind of camera that is more often rented than owned. I couldn't be more pleased!

Now I hope they consult some of us for opinions on what the camera should have! This is the perfect opportunity for Red to work with their big customers like Sim Video and PS Production Services and allow them (and their rental clients) to build the perfect digital cinema camera.

I think the problem for people crew is we were all led to believe RED ONE was the high end upgradable camera for the high end professional. we were sold on the price point. I think people are afraid that RED will abandon RED ONE and leave us all with 18k+ egg on our faces. it will be no fun struggling to implement something on RED ONE that will be easier on EPIC so maybe RED ONE won't get the same amount of attention or love.

$40k is the kind of price that only rental houses can afford. I might rent epic but I'll never buy it. I'd be afraid Epic 2 gets announced at the next nab for $80k. if this isn't the case and RED will still put the energy into RED ONE and not siphon it off into EPIC's future then I'll be happier. right now all this does is raise so many questions. I think what RED did for lower end shooters was great. scarlet is a steal. but the rest of US hoping RED ONE would improve and improve maybe feeling a little trigger shy. specially since you could end up with a dud after the one year warranty runs out. I certainly can't purchase an 18k camera every year. with that kind price the warranty should have been 3 to 5 years.

Well, use your 18k doorstop to earn the 12k, so you can afford the 30k doorstop :-)

ehh, then use your 18k doorstop to earn the 22k, so you can afford the 40k doorstop :-)

Sorry:---

if EPIC ends up having really high DR we're all screwed. we'll end up owning 18k doorstops

Well that was not a very nice thing to say.

You are talking about Red One, right ?

The way I see this we now have:
- The AppleTV -> RedRay
- The iBook -> Scarlet
- The MacBook Pro -> RedOne
- The Mac Pro -> Epic

The practice of RED offering the RedOne as a trade-in for the Epic is probably more like a car dealership giving you some value for your old car providing that you haven't wrapped it around a tree prior.

So far my only rant on the Scarlet is, no interchangeable lens. I believe Canon handled this well with their Rebel el-cheapo dSLR as an entry drug. So you can build up your set of lenses and "earn-up" your way through better and better cam bodies.

The slim form factor will make it great for stereo, so a matching dual mattebox would be killer!

cheers,
Frank

I don't see how releasing the EPIC will make the REDONE a doorstop. The EPIC is not going to blow the REDONE out of the water.

The EPIC is just a refinement aimed at very specific users. I'm sure it will have more dynamic range, we already know it has less compression most likely less skew and definitely higher frame rates.
