  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My worst nightmare happened. Fedex said it delivered my camera but it never arrived.

So i'm kind of on the verge of a nervous breakdown now lol. My Scarlet-W body was scheduled to be delivered today to my home address in Hawaii. Although I am not in Hawaii at the moment (I'm in Bangkok now), my sister was home to take delivery of the camera. She had already successfully gotten 3 other packages from RED last week with no problem (lens mount, 240gb ssd, and red station). Today (3/3/2016) I got the notification that FEDEX delivered my package at 4:12pm, but my sister said she never saw a FEDEX truck. She even sent me a text at 4:20pm saying she was still waiting. I checked online and it said "N.Nate" (my name but not me!) had signed for the package and that it was left at the "front desk/reception" even though that's impossible because the address is a house and in a residential neighborhood, there are no apartments whatsoever. We immediately called FEDEX who said that they would check with the driver and get back to us tomorrow. But who knows what's happened with the camera in the mean time! The thought of it is just making me pull my hair out. I know its RED's policy that they don't take responsibility for the cameras once they've shipped, but can anyone help me somehow? Should I report this to the police??? I really wish the option to insure the package had been told to me upfront, as i would have gladly paid for it. I just put too much faith in FEDEX, i thought everything would be fine in the states (since there was no way i would ship the camera to thailand!). It's literally the most money i've ever spent on a single item, I just can't believe this happened. Of all the luck. Anyway I would recommend to everybody ordering these expensive items to get insurance for them before they ship!! Protect yourselves in case the worst thing happens!!

Isn't Red responsible for the shipment of the camera to you? If there's a problem with the shipment I'm not sure how you can be the one responsible for it? Fedex has a lot of different options with insurances and so on and if Red shipped such expensive gear with just regular and then say you are out of luck, that is a problem. I don't however think that is the case, so get in contact with your rep about this as well. Because most insurances won't cover such a shipment.

Check with your neighbors. About once a year, a package bound for me would end up at a neighbor's house. And about once a year, I'd get a package that was clearly addressed to one of my neighbors.

My bomb squad representative assured me that in case of this, it would be RED's insurance that takes care of it. Just need to get fedex admit that the package is stolen/lost.

I am really sorry for your stress as I had my backpack stolen once with $10,000 of gear inside. Horrible feeling :( But you do have a valid claim and it is FedEx's fault if they miss delivered it.

It's a bit too late for this, but for anything important, I just have FedEx or UPS leave it at their hub or the various FedEx / UPS stores in my area - there's a lot of them these days. Then I stop by and pick it up at my leisure. It's much, much safer that way.

Over Christmas, I had someone mail back my XQD Cards via FedEx. I know they dropped it off because my wife gate buzzed them in remotely from her cell phone. The package was stolen and several of my neighbors had their stuff stolen as well. FedEx said they left it so they were not responsible for the stolen card which meant I lost $300, which of course is pennies compared to a Red.

So now, just about everything goes to the shipper's hub / store locations.

I've had fedex deliver to the wrong address on a number of occasions over the years including throwing a case over superspeeds over a fence into neighbors yard. Everything eventually showed up. But I avoid fedex like the plague now.

Fedex is outsourcing a lot of their delivery to independent contractors where I live, and there is NO quality control. It's gotten a little nerve-wracking to be sending and receiving expensive gear through them. They are wrecking their brand. I used to trust Fedex but not so much anymore.

Good news! After alot of drama FEDEX managed to recover the package! Apparently the delivery driver was a new unexperienced guy and took it to a completely different address, a business office, where someone in the driveway claimed to be "Nate's brother" and signed for it. The FEDEX guy completely violated his procedure because they are not supposed to allow packages to be signed for unless the person is actually inside the residence or office, and did not ask for any identification (much less take it to the wrong address!). The package was unopened and we got it back home safe now. Thanks for all the supportive messages guys.

Man, that is crazy! It's the one thing that almost kept me from buying these expensive equipment in the first place. Having to constantly worry about it being stolen, damaged, lost. But yeah a good idea to have them delivered to the hub instead. I will try and do that from now on.

I think all postal services around the world have 'weak points'.

I wonder how many years it will be before it is standard practice to digitally sign for something? And if you are not available, you have the ability to Delegate the signing on your behalf?

1 RED Isn't responsible for the security of their delivery (or won't take responsability)
2 Fedex pay not the value but an amount per weight of the package (5 kilo is something like 1000$...)
3 your insurance is the only one that takes care of stolen equipment (usually not covers 100% of it) provided you have this special insurance.

Stolen equipment on the way back from Red HQ happened to us.

Yes get insurance and when you do make sure to have a lityle email corresoondance with your broker where you state the typical example of what can happen and have them assure you that yes its covered in written.

I got 150k usd worth of gear stolen last year. after fighting with the help of costly lawyers etc My insurance civered a bit more than half... and that took almost a year to claim. So be careful. by gps trackers. dont check in your louggage, stay away from professional looking pelli cases. etc.

It's insane to me how shipping companies are one of the few places that can completely fail to do the one job they were hired to do and avoid responsibility.

I have also had FedEx drop off expensive packages (new lens) at a completely different address. Is there a UPS shipping option with RED? Because I'll gladly pay extra for them to deliver it.

I think there is but it's kind of tricky as you have to contact bomb squad before the delivery planning and create your personnal shipping number (not RED's one).
Even so I don't know if it really works as we tried to do it but the camera was sent with the regular shipping practice.
My 2 cents would be that RED at ordering time would incorpore a transportation insurance option with 100% refund if the case has been stolen or lost before delivery...

PS: our Dragon upgrade was stolen in the delivery truck 10 miles from our door step.

Congrats Nate...and/or Chommavong somphane (whoever owns the cam)! It is scary but glad this had a happy ending.
