  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My take on the RED Dragon...

JJ, I am very happy with my MX, and I really appreciate your dedication to the industry. I am very happy about the upgrade mentality. Its a green mentality, not just because of the sheer fact you save us money, but because it saves on resources by making devices that can last longer in today's throw away society. You also build an electronic in America. Not many people do that these days. I fully support Red and appreciate what you have done!

Many are quick to dismiss a sensor upgrade as a "fix" rather than as a near complete reinvention of a particular camera. How quickly people forget what a HUGE deal the MX upgrade was over the original M sensor, and how rapidly it propelled RED from that "experimental" camera company with a few credits to the cinema mainstay we know today.

The camera world has become a giant game of leapfrog, and the MX is at the back of the line. That's not an insult in any way; the MX is the oldest competitive cinema sensor on the market. Heck, I first used the sensor in late 2009 or early 2010.

The MX completely redefined the RED One, just as the Dragon will completely redefine the Epic.

Once again thank you Jim and Jarred and all the RED team....You are the best

Jim, you are killing it. And you have been for the last 37+ years. Ha. Congratulations to you, and the entire REDteam. Thank you for all of your effort and willingness to redefine the camera industry. You really are an inspiration.

As for all the skin tone nonsense...well...if ignorance is truly bliss, you'd think most producers would be happy more often. Just saying.

will it put the skin tone issue to bed. its all anyone seems to want to talk about

The only issue with skintones is that which you create yourself. I've heard this time and time again and it's utter nonsense. Know your camera and know how to light for it and process the footage.

Jim, we appreciate all the sleepless months you and the RED team have put into the Dragon (even though some of the REDUSER's don't seem to respect that at all). The tried and true REDUSERs that have been here since the beginning are not going anywhere. We were the first 1000 customers, and I'm ecstatic to be a part of that group.

Now that things are buttoned down, are there going to be any ancillary benefits to MX with Dragon's colour science upgrades and enhancements (e.g. did colour science get better across the board and are any of the new functions usable on MX even if limited compared to Dragon's implementation)?

... I was still kind of hoping/dreaming Scarlet-X would get 4480x1920 or that pseudo-HDRx 4k mode discussed early on (or are those off the table now that Dragon is full steam ahead)?

Can't wait for some Dragon .r3ds to tinker with!

I know you guys have plenty of cheerleaders and detractors, but you should feel great about what you've done. A motion picture camera with the highest resolution, the greatest dynamic range, the best RAW compression, and a great form factor. Can the argument be made you have invented the best motion picture camera in the world? Absolutely.

Why should you care about anything else?

Celebrate. I will be shooting.

Congratulation................ Yes ...Dragon ....... "Beyond the Dreams"..................soon I will achieve it...........

Thanks

Yep. What he said^. :)

Only one thing pisses me off though...I should have taken the Robert Rodriquez tact and donated myself to medical research to get that reservation "R" back when. I screwed that one up. Haha.

We're at the point now where footage from even the MX sensor can be manipulated to look virtually identical to film (feels weird saying this but "Flight" was the first RED movie to absolutely blow me away, not that the others weren't awesome, I just kept saying "wow" out loud throughout the whole movie - it looked better than any movie i've ever watched, film and digital). I just can't imagine how the Dragon sensor will be much better but that's not a bad thing. It just speaks to the awesomeness of the MX sensor. I'm prepared to be awwed by Dragon.

I do think that future development in the areas of color science and resolution will level out now that the film benchmark has been hit and I'm hoping the focus will shift to other cool stuff like low light (which Dragon is tackling), light field tech (ex. lytro-like post focusing), building on the technology in the soon to be released motion mount (global shutter, internal ND, polarizer, and filters), battery life (crazy how not much has been done in this area in decades), higher frame rates (ex. 1000fps+), ...etc...

With the way things are going, I won't be surprised if over the next 10 years, even lenses become obsolete as the "brain" can do it all.

Here's to RED and to innovation!

I feel privileged to have a front row seat!

Its very gratifying to see the pride you guys take in this. It must be a very fulfilling thing to carve from nothing a creative tool of any sort, let alone an exceptional one.
The interminable amount of time it seems to take me to get just about anything done is always my benchmark for 'lateness'.

One day I'll write emails as short and to the point as Jarred's and then I suppose I'll probably get more done...

The power to deliver of a big, smart team with the right leadership is an awesome thing. Way beyond the sum of its parts.

I love my Epic MX skin tones. Skin is more about exposure, light sources and grading than sensors, this skin tone thing is getting old. That said I have confident that Dragon will handle flesh just fine.

+1 seriously -- if u cant nail the skin tone with the MX then you need to check your lighting and color correction methods.

Brook, I couldn't agree more!

Amen!

Those who know how to reproduce accurate color GET accurate color, and now with Dragon they also get a shit load of DR too. yipeekayea

I just can't believe that a camera I carry in one hand whilst skiing knee deep powder to get to my next location will now be able to do 6K at close to 100 frames! It beggars belief.
Those extra stops won't hurt filming in snowy conditions either.
Congratulations to you all
And it draws less power just to top it off
