How many of you are really gonna get ur investment back on these cams it is definitely over kill for the web, and such a slow workflow and unreliable cams and heavy as hell, they just eat more money than they make if ur just shooting web stuff, who is ever gonna really see ur 4k footage imax? really? who will you deliver this 4k material too I just don't understand 20k spent for what?
so u all can shoot the same stuff thats all over the web like flowers boats waves bugs allot of over used slow motion, sorry but out of all of you I only see maybe one of you making it big in the industry the rest are never really gonna amount to anything, too much competition out there and scarlet will not give u the edge at all, battery life is horrible ssds are way too expensive, storage is expensive, slow workflow and for what? to deliver a 1080p image in the end! I really hope none of you have to end up selling ur Scarlet because u got in over ur head and cant pay ur credit or bank loan unless ur shooting a feature for the big screen u over payed, and trust me not everything on red looks flawless I have seen red footage look like crap at times in the hands of wrong ppl in the end all the money in the long run u are spending might as well bought an epic and get it over with...
4k is for ppl that need all the help in the world in post because you cant shoot it right the first time so u have to grade the shit out out it to make it look passable. sorry to offend but now after seeing the light have to say unless ur gonna get ur investment back in a month or have a lot of money to burn this camera is not for u ! the scarlet fixed would have been a better choice but now u have a overpriced camera for what?
most of u spend more time on here than shooting, I have seen fs100 beat red footage on the web at times I have seen 5d footage look incredible for ppl who know what they are doing but i'm gonna losse it if I see more red footage of boats flowers and garbage, where is the features or real work who is really paying u all to shoot flowers and waves and please stop using so much 120fps everyone does it it's getting lame now.
Fact most theater only project 2k as it is and with all the sofware bugs epic has u think ur scarlet will really be reliable, I think u all should have waited to see how the scarlet works out there hear reviews and stuff but all of u are so eager to plop down 15k like its 5 bucks wow must be nice to burn money like that, plus 4k tech will be available almost everywhere soon and cheaper you all think that no one can cum out with a better cam than red u must be smoking crack there will always be someone better than u so I bid goodbye to red and all of it's overpriced hype and buggy software RED is excellent for feature films but for internet overkill....
Hve fun getting in to debt and only being able to shoot 12--15min of footage at a time on 64gb and 25-30 min on redvolt not worth all the trouble in the end don't bother tot respond to me I wont read it i'm out peace.....
Bart, I pulled out some key points you bring up, but I'm skipping the end where you come unhinged
"Price"
RED cameras are incredibly cheap.
Professional quality gear is expensive.
When I started out almost no one even thought about owning their own cameras and this was not very long ago. You were not going to own a Panalfex, Arri or Moviecam camera. Forget it.
Sure, compared to a DSLR a Scarlet is not cheap, but I have no interest in a DSLR. If that works for you then go for it. It doesn't for me. I know people do quality work with them, but I'm not interested. Never have been.
"Slow workflow"
If you think this workflow is slow you should try 35mm film. My first film was 35mm and the process was very frustrating. You don't get to see the true quality of what you shot until the very end of the process and it costs a fortune! Ever dealt with digitizing one-light copies of your footage off Beta tapes? How about flexfiles, keycode and cutting negative... and having to send what you shoot off to a film lab and just hoping everything turned out OK? I worked on projects where we didn't get dailies back until after we wrapped. Dealing with RED footage is a dream!
"Unreliable..."
RED is pushing the envelope and it's not always a smooth ride when you do that. There are bugs, things get delayed and that's just how it goes when you are making your own trail. I am totally OK with this because the benefits to us are huge. I have full faith in RED coming through and in the end there is a good chance we will get MORE than we paid for. I also don't hear about people having very many problems with this generation of RED cameras.
"Heavy as hell..."
Try going handheld with a Panavision GII
"4k"
I think people have already covered why 4k is important in this thread. It's where things are going and I would rather be a little bit ahead of the game than behind and playing catch up.
"flowers... boats... slow motion..."
It's called test footage. People are sharing it to help others get an idea what the cameras are capable of. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Tonaci, who was nice enough to share some "flower boats waves" footage with us, is probably more successful in this industry than you... by a mile.
"Storage"
SSDs may seem expensive, but when I think about how much I have spend on 35mm filmstock in the past to get comparable quality I can only smile and laugh. This is like a dream! I've spent more than the price of a Scarlet package on film stock alone! Ever try to shoot an entire project on short ends? I'll take "expensive" SSD drives over that any time!
"I only see maybe one of you making it big in the industry the rest are never really gonna amount to anything"
What's the point of even saying something like that? Wish success to everyone. How does it hurt you if other people do well?
