So I'm slowly chipping away at the Komodo's sensor and color science combination. It's different, that's for sure, but very very organic and pleasing. I noticed that most of the LUT's I use will just not work with this, so I'm on the hunt for new ones that play well, while also making some of my own... Here is a few different options I've been working on so far:

Top photo is a technicolor lut rebuild which I feel is the most natural looking and the bottom one is a lut called K Tone Vintage which swings warmer... I'll be posting more here as time goes. I'm working on low light luts and other color correction post work flows slowly.

interesting, thanks, however I just enjoy building my own and tweaking to what I like. His stuff is a little too orange and teal for me, and I honestly own hundreds already haha. This is more of a personal project for me, for upcoming shoots.

Any chance you could post a R3D file of image above?

I can't because it will show license plates, but I'm working on sharing other R3D grabs soon

This is the raw image from komodo:

Less crushed blacks and shadows

The irony is I have been pretty adamant about not releasing an orange/teal LUT to date. Until R3s upcoming release due to popular demand.

When can we expect philmColor R3 to be released? Im ready to purchase and already like/appreciate what you did with R2.

Won't have to purchase again. Will need to re-download. philmColor to date has had free upgrades from R1 to R2 and R3.

It's coming this month.

Also, we'll or I'll make a post about it sometime this month. The IPP2 LUTs that ship in Komodo were developed by me in conjunction with RED. Fun collaboration actually, though a couple of really long nights. Subtle stuff in there, but I'll write up something shortly.

The grades look really bad. The shot is underexposed to start with. The grades show crushed blacks and very low dynamic range. This looks worse than shooting the same shot with a mirrorless camera.

I don't think the grades look bad, nor is that log image under exposed at all. Grades to push to a crushed black, which is obviously a choice. The two LUTs these are based on are readily available and pretty common, though I'd be careful with the K Tone LUT in particular in a grading scenario.

So yeah, fine with the shot and how it was captured and even the grade.

My bigger question is what glass was used.

The blacks are crushed on these LUTs and are by definition a “look” not meant to be neutral. This was a random handheld shot. Probably not the “best”. But the point was to start working with LUTs to see how they react to Komodos sensor and dial in the look they were intended for on other sensors.

Work on this got cut short because of the storm. No power for 2 days now

I won't comment on the grades, but the original shot does not look underexposed, in the least.
