  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

my EOS "smart" mount...

Fantastic work Andy, but could you please give us all an answer to the ALL CRITICAL QUESTION - has RED had a look at what you've developed? and if so what's the state of play?:help:

best
joe

We have seen this mount.. and its good. Really good. In fact, it will probably be the first 3rd party mount we fully Certify.

Can't commit to anything until we see the final production model.. but this thing is badass....

That's good news for everyone involved.

Can this EF mount be driven from a View factor control device.

thanks,

Geez. . . I wish I'd made book on the Erik versus Andy bout.

:-)

This is looking fantastic, and Jarred's comments more or less tell the tale right there.

Looking forward to getting it on my RED!

If I am in the first 20 like I have down in my list....AWESOME!

I have had my RED for a couple months and really want to start shooting. I know what you mean about needing cash. I am waiting on a Red 18-80 too.

I am very excited and since it is so close to completion I will wait for the working unit instead of just a dumb mount.

I AM SO PUMPED TO GET MY HANDS ON THIS MOUNT!!!!!

I CAN'T WAIT.....

Certification is only for its relationship to the RED CAMERA..... it would be impossible or us to certify the lenses and combinations of the system as well, all lens issues would fall upon the mount manufacture.

What about constant AF use impacting USM motors? Not really RED's problem, but negative fallout wouldn't be good on a certified third party product.

Yeah, I also think as long as one uses a RED camera, it should be RED's responsibility if something goes wrong.

Like, shoot a drama with an Epic and the actor is really crap. That outta fall under warranty.

If at the end of 22hr pop promo shoot with a RED One the AD crashes on his way home, RED should clearly pay for all hospital bills.

Document your children's soccer game on the Scarlet, and your team loses. RED ought to pay for pizza for everyone, at the very least.

Spending too much time on Reduser.net? RED certainly should refund your loss in potential income.

Guys, gals, ladies and gentlemen, this is really simple. RED has a very friendly warranty scheme. Obviously that covers the RED camera. If you add anything to your camera, that is not covered. If you change something on your camera, and it is not certified, you void your warranty and will no longer be able to exchange it for an Epic. If you change something with a certified mount, just swap back to the PL mount before sending it in for upgrade or warranty repair.

All else is way beyond RED's responsibility. Or as Jarred has put it, fuck with your camera and the warranty is fucked.

Errm. Think I was a bit unclear with my last post. :umm:

I was not in any way suggesting RED should warranty USM lens damage from a third party mount.

My concern (see relevant thread link in my post trying to avoid duplicate postings) was that Andy Lesniak's mount hasn't been tested for as long as Birger's previous industrial EF mounts, so any potential issues such as USM lens motor burnout from continuous current application may not have turned up yet in Andy's mount.

As I said, it's not really RED's problem, except that full certification may be interpreted by some as an endorsement which could inadvertently rebound on RED's reputation if Canon lenses start dying.

Not saying Andy's mount will have such issues - just raising potential problems that should be taken into account when RED certifies (eg exact wording of certification and disclaimers) and maybe also how 3rd Party manufacturers are allowed to quote that certification?

Eric... your point is very well taken.. honestly. You understand the complexity of the situation.

I am of course concerned about fallout if there happens to be auxiliary damage from certified products for sure.. but if we let that stop that we would need to close the door shut on 3rd parties completely... and I don't think that's what is best for the customer. That "best for the customer" attitude is why we pick and choose who we approve and work with.. its not ALWAYS just a technical decision.... attitude is important in that decision, if a company is "hard" to work with at the company to company level to get a product rolling when at that point the 3rd party company has the most motivation, I question what happens when random customers start having problems...

We sometimes like the "little guy" more because of this.. customer service usually is alot better. Doug and the RED-Nikon mounts, Birger and his mounts, Element Technica, and hopefully I can momentarily have the audacity and say RED ourselves.... are all tried and true examples of this.

Cool. This new RED paradigm is tricky to nail down - especially as we don't want to nail everything down! :red_bandana:

cmon you guys can certify. its not like you have anything else to do! heheh

Andy, is your mount able to use the auto focus motors in auto mode or is that
a function of the camera. i am not a still guy so..either way this unit is looking good!! i will probably pick one up as well.

It's a function of the camera, but also has to communicate with the lens motors.

AFAIK the parts that wear out during extended focus operations are in the lens, so I'd expect wearout to be related to the specific lens, more than the mount.

I think some still DSLR sports shooters already operate with their lenses autofocusing almost continuously during an event, so if this was a serious problem, I think we might already know about it.
