  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

my EOS "smart" mount...

The last days I tried to contact Andy several times – no responds…
Has someone received an answer form him lately?

he might be shooting. he is not a company that is in an office working all day.
Andy has been vey good with his updates so i would wait until friday before i worry.

juat sayin.

Howdy Everyone! update time... alive and kickin over here, just very tired.. ;)

I'm going thru my backlog of PM's and Email today to try to get caught up.
it's been pretty busy, just so everyone is aware, currently this is my 2nd
job, I work full time as a Visual effects supervisor/artist for a big post house
doing commercial work, which as you know is fast and furious, then work
all night on the mount... sprinkle a 3-4hrs sleep, and repeat... that's why
my updates are not as frequent, and my emails lag a bit, I wish for more
hours in a day sometimes... enough about me. here's where things stand
since my last update.

I recieved new parts for my power management, as well as lemo connectors
to hook into red power, it is all asssembled now, and we're going to be
stress testing it over the next few days, into the weekend.

We have mostly been working on polishing up the firmware in the controller
taking care of a few pesky bugs the plague a few lenses, most are squished now
just going to hammer on it a little bit longer to make sure.

now for some videos!

Focus Demo
Quick demo showing smooth f/stop action, as well as microstepping and fast focus moves.
There are 2 videos. the first one is the quick demo, the 2nd
is the recorded footage from red showing how smooth the rack-focus is.
also a little something for you to find... a possible sighting of a future product
we might have coming in one of the videos... going to leave it to speculation for now.

(just a note on the controller in the video, 1. that's not the final surface finish. I'll post some pictures of the final surface finish soon
it's a rough/shiny surface, much nicer. 2. that's not the latest version with the focus speed control switch on the side, it's assembled,
just not in it's case yet. but otherwise pretty much the same..)

Focus Demo (presentation) 20meg "right click save as!"
Focus Demo (footage) 3meg

now for some other news, here is our current roadmap of things to do, and future plans for the time being..

1. deliver this thing... w/controller
2. advanced controller w/bluetooth other features ect...
3. IMS version / Nikon Version
4. build evil lair

2 and 3 are going to probably be happening at the same time, right now
the focus is getting all the last bugs out and mass distribution, then we will
re-assess the situation... but there are lots of plans, especially nikon support
as it's been asked for quite a few times, so it will be a priority.

as far as our current shipping plans, next step is I plan on doing another demo for RED next week. to see what comments they have, ideas, thoughts. ect...
(btw, Thank you Jarred for your comments! you guys rock!!) this is important to me, as I see them as holding the "bar"
on what is good and not good enough to be on their equipment, so before things go out, as much as I want them to right this second..
I believe it's in everyone's best interest to make sure RED is happy.

Some sort of data store in a hard case? Portable offload device not requiring a dedicated computer?

Very excited about your mount. It seems like a great comprehensive solution that might actually come to market and be broadly available.

Hi there. . . it is looking terrific! (And, just so you know, Andy, I have yet to hear from you regarding my PMs. . . :-)

Here's what I want to know:

1. Can the controller be mounted to the rails in the position of a normal follow-focus wheel?

2. Are you 100% going to be producing a wireless system for this unit? (I need this more for Actioncam work than for anything else.)

Thanks much.

Stephen

welly welly well...someone has convinced me!!! now i'm back to canon lenses!!!

Videos are cool. I will just wait for the real thing. I already have brain overload being in the process of starting my business. Watching the video I might have to take a bottle of valium to come down...lol.

A little late on this but since the early days of RED I wanted to use my Canon L glass.
So how about international orders?
Please put me on the list for this one Andy.
I'll fire up a PM in a few minutes.
Thanks for making this one!
gregory

EDIT:
Andy what lenses have you trested on the mount so far?
I am especially interested on any L glass and particularly on the EF 50mm f/1L [link]
and the EF MP-E65mm f/2.8 1-5X [link]

Andy I am sure you've got my PM's, I'll await your answer.

Andy was really good in reporting…
Since one week we don’t here anything from him…
Since tow weeks he also does not responses to PMs (or has anybody gotten an answer?)

Must be a reason for that…

Maybe he got an interesting offer by RED and is not supposed to talk about it till the 13. of November …

just a guess…

I hope this is more than wishful thinking...

It would be more than just great: Andy is offering the option of either a dumb or a smart mount, and he has plans on delivering an IMS solution, too. He is good with RED, and quick on catching up in technology.

I would not mind such an outcome :)

An "official" solution based on Andy's mount would be fantastic. Ideally, it would take a what looks like a really well designed solution and join it with RED's amazing production knowhow.

At this point I would just like a solid and readily available Canon lens option.
