Why is that somebody is always out to make an extra buck as soon as a potential opportunity arrives?

If Jim and the team at RED had this attitude, everybody would pay more for their camera and there wouldn't be any "extras" fro those lucky enough to have got in with a reservation.

Those of us that missed out would just like the opportunity to get a reservation, and not at an extortionate "auctioned off" price!

People are out to make a buck because a lot of those people are poor, and they understand that money buys food and shelter and happiness.

What are you talking about in regards to missed opportunities? They opened up reservations a second time... did you miss it both times?

Lowkus.... poor people who do not have food and shelter do not spend $17500 on 4k cameras and then thousands more on the extras they need to use them! It's excessive financial opportunism that I'm disappointed by.

And yes I did miss the reservations both times. I was away working overseas on when the first reservations were opened and didn't know about the second "4-day-only" opportunity until three days after it had closed.

Silly me.

I'm not saying those poor people are currently without food and shelter, I'm saying that they have an understanding that they WILL be without food and shelter unless they make some money. So they put the camera on credit cards and borrow money from people and generally stretch their credit beyond what's even close to comfortable. Or in this case, they borrow money to cover the reservation. Later on, they'll try to make back a little profit by utilizing what they bought, or by selling their high-demand camera for more than what they paid. That profit, it's not excessive, it's just the market moving according to demand. Now, if you were left without feasible alternatives, then things might get excessive (think gas prices and medical bills). But this camera will eventually go on sale to the general public within a year or so, and therefore an alternative exists and you aren't obligated to pay super-high prices.

That's the essence of capitalism. How can that possibly surprise you?

Although I suppose if any camera lent itself towards a communist attitude, it would be fitting if it were RED. :p

Hi Scott,

I'm not at all surprised. As I said earlier in this post, I'm disappointed. I'm here as a film maker who dreams of making his "dream cinema documentary" with an affordable camera that shoots amazing pictures, not to watch as the bidder with the most bucks snaps up the camera I desperately long to obtain!

Big bucks alone do not make great films. Hollywood is evidence of that!

I'm empathizing with the guy from Slovakia, or South Africa, (or any number of other places) who are on this board and dream about shooting their films on RED but – like me – missed out on a reservation. They would relate to my feelings, I think!

I don't want to sound like and idealistic troll, but the whole world is already up for sale. If we were all motivated by capitalism first, then somebody could have just bought the entire first bunch of reservations then auctioned them off one at a time to the highest bidder.... then charged more if you want the Titanium "R" thrown in. Would that have been a good idea?

I'm not here for capitalism, but only to find a way to express ideas through film in the most creative and artistic way I can afford!

There's nothing 'Communist' about that!

I'm sorry if we offend your artistic nature.
Can I recomend one of these for getting off your horse.

Thanks for reminding me about the right to free speech and expressing my opinion Chris. Maybe I'll make a make a documentary about the wonders of ladders in the modern world.

You would definitely have a birds eye perspective on it from up there.

There are two sides to every issue.

If the red camera delivers on it's promises and becomes a contender in the world that I work in . . . I put in a reservation sometime in August or September waiting for the new gadget smell to wear off and the realities of the workflow to work themselves out. I will be waiting until this time next year to get my camera. Without a few people who are willing to take delivery and then turn around and sell their camera I will be out of the loop for much longer.

If the red camera turns out to be unable to deliver on it's promises then I have lost nothing.

Capitalism works because both sides win. The buyer and the seller are both willing participants. Someone else takes the risk and I reward him/her for it.

Just curious. Is the "non-transferable" rule an attempt to prevent exactly this -- profiteering on eBay or whatever, like we saw in the early days of the PS3?

I am sure more than a few "owners" will try to do this...
Once they have RED in hand we will see some
trying to $$$$ in.

Brainstorm, relax.

Your "Free Speech" is actually being paid for out of my very pocket... on a website I spent alot of time and money building, for the positive discussion surrounding Red.

If you troll and start insulting my members, your "free speech" wont be heard for very long.

now play nice.

Jarred,
Everybody is continually gratefully about the site you've created here. Thank you ain't enough for what your doing here.

I only assume you know more history/read more into what brainstorm said, but I didn't.

Jarred, like David (quoted above) I greatly appreciate your site.

Like David, I also don't understand why you're offended by my comment? I wasn't "trolling". I was just responding to being told to get of my "artistic high horse". Isn't that reasonable?

I'd like to add that capitalism doesn't work unless there is a decent distribution of wealth. People who have the most money need to spread it around to poor people or populations start bubbling with disfunction. Ask some of the poor Russians how capitalism is working for them and you'll see why it doesn't always work right. Now capitalism with maximum caps on how much any one person could own... that would work great!

I should run for dictator... errr, I mean... president.

Or conversely ask how well capitalism is working for RED China.
I have been there, they are kicking butt...
