  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Music

Not all digital audio gear is bland and clinical. Not all analogue gear is warm and mushy. One of the reasons I like vinyl is that a) I have a good selection on vinyl, and b) a lot of the music I like was originally recorded and mastered with vinyl in mind as the delivery platform. To me, it makes sense to listen to it that way. And vinyl is fun, and interactive (and frustrating too sometimes). I also have high end digital playback - CD and DVD-A, and that sounds great too - not clinical or boring.

And just because RED is a digital camera, it doesn't mean that it lacks a life and energy that is traditionally associated with analogue approaches to imaging.

Don't get me wrong. I totally understand and appreciate all ways of listening to music but there just is something about hearing the classic signature crackling of the record before it plays.

This thread seems like a good place to ask something that I have been wondering for a long time: How can I find and play music that is better than CD quality? Lossless FLAC's thru the optical output of my Mac? Blu-Ray? Something else?

(I know vinyl is the shiznit, but don't think I can go there.)

Here is Gary Moore... a lot of rhythm and blues all the guitar special like BB king Santana etc... and when I have the mood a Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing in full volume...

Sometimes you can see me in a traffic light jumping on my seat when I have the "Walking by my self" of Gary Moore... especially the live version...

Some times at night when I'm thinking or building something I put an Internet radio from i-tunes with smooth ambiance music...

Source is the issue.

CD is uncompressed 44.1Khz/16bit. Ripping it to any other format (lossless or otherwise) won't improve it.

DVD-A and SACD are two higher-definition-than-CD formats, but they have slim selection and are considered by many to be dying formats. They are also copy protected and more difficult to rip if playing them on a computer is your goal.

There's some discussion of using the Blu Ray profile 3.0 (audio only) and it's newer codec support (including lossless 24bit LPCM) to release music... but that's in it's infancy.

The Music Giants website has some stuff to check out that is 88.2/24 lossless.

DVD-A and the DAD's from Classic Records sound great, but hard to find and small selection. Worth getting if you can though! I'm not keen on SACD... Both hard to find and have small selection of titles.

High resolution downloads are available. I've tried B&W's free ones, but wasn't that impressed, but perhaps more because of their choice of music.

What might be best is getting a really good DAC on your Mac, or a really good CD player...

I came to this thread late but when I read the words 'vinyl' and 'floyd' I knew I had to mention that album ... just gut feeling that it would be your cup of tea. Was hanging out with ppl in lanc, moors, heard intersting stories about Kate's life in london and how Gilmore discovered her. Maybe some harrowing stuff that should not be typed. Such unearthly music.

After reading your post I checked iTunes store and only some tracks from Aerial are available. Trust the brits to keep things analogue (altho u did say it's on CD). I think I will try to find it on vinyl first, especially now that it is in my mind.

no news about gilmore and kate? ;-)

i read an interview 20 years ago, they had to do the vocal recordings of kate at night, because the voice was so compressed you could hear the trucks on the country road many miles away ...

best wishes,
martin
