  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Music

Clearly this implies you've just finished coding something.

Care to share?

:wink5:

Steve is the only one who got this? Y'all have the same taste in music, sure... But the 'just finished coding' is the interesting part, no?

And, Maybe he's too young, but shouldn't a Canadian be listening to Rush?

3:00AM here... Got the headphones on and cranking Metallica, NIN, and just about anything else I can queue up. I'm about to crash for a few hours though.

Probably unknown to people in the US, but try listening to The Enid. Amazing "classical rock" (I hate that phrase, but not sure what else to call it).

I thought my stereo was pretty good, but I had the pleasure of listening to the digital master in their recording studio last weekend. Awesome.

Graeme, you work in Canada? I thought you Red guys all work under one roof (kinda like the BREDY Bunch :) ) Another illusion gone forever...

Nothing exciting on the coding at all - just end of a day fixing up code, tidying stuff up, figuring out how things work to help with hardware implementations. Pretty typical.

So I thought that although it's great to talk about cameras, it was time for another music thread! And TD on vinyl - now that's interesting.

I play this game with myself, where when I'm out walking on the trail, I listen to a bunch of various modern pop stuff, but then about half-way through the trail I switch to a Led Zeppelin playlist. I'm always amazed how incredible it is in comparison to anything new. Not to sound like some old purist, because I like most modern music, but damn, it's so rich and original and bizarre and inspiring.

You're right you can really notice the compression on todays music,no range in
in the mix that's why it's always a joy to listen to Paul Simon for example

Yes, compression on modern music is very annoying. It's like taking all the life and robbing it out of the music, leaving a lifeless homogenous mess in it's place. Compression, when used sparingly, by those that know what they're doing, I can cope with. But so much music today is just designed for radio playback or worse. And all a good hifi does now is tell you how badly the music is engineered, not how superb the actual music itself is. Rant off.

I try to play DVD-As if I can - 192khz/24bit sounds rather nice to me. But they're hard to find and the choice of music on them is just not that wide. I buy a fair bit of new and second hand vinyl. I also buy CDs and listen to them, but it's rather offputting to get some new music you like, but when you finally get it home to listen to, it's compressed-to-hell and sounds pretty much like the mp3 or radio version.

Graeme

Yes, it is strange that composers now have 24 bit to work in, but then their music often gets distributed as mp3. I know this upset my composer friend.

I dig a lot of different kinds of music - old rock, some new rock, blues, reggae, classical, country, new age (Kitaro, Wollenweider), etc. - choice of music depends on the mood I'm in at the time - or want to get into :)

Pink Floyd made some amazing tracks. Contemporaries of Pink Floyd I've always liked, who really did some amazing early synthesizer work (2nd album onward) are the Moody Blues. I've been into their music since the late '60's - seen 'em many times in concert - sheer creativity, enlightening lyrics, way ahead of their time, but still timeless.
