now that everything shoots at least 720p ...

am i wrong to say that putting together a couple of shots off your iphone together with two lines of dialogue should not be considered a movie?

everything on the net is a movie .. random shots of anything is now a movie or short film.

but running out the first day something is released that shoots half ass video going home and "filming" 2 minutes worth of pointless garbage is NOT A MOVIE..

thats like going on a forum and putting "FIRST!!!" on the comments.

its a video .

A movie is series of images that give the illusion of continuous movement. It has its sub-headings, sometimes dealing in length such as short film or feature length. You can rate these as good or bad at your discretion.

It's rather bad form to call someone else's good time "garbage" though, unless it's directly affecting you in a negative manner I'd guess. If you don't like it, turn it off. A cliche but it works.

Just what or who is it that's ruffling your feathers so much? :frown2:

You do raise a good question with your rant :)

What line do you guys draw between a video and a movie? What if someone rushed off to buy the iphone 4 and shot a 5 minute narrative piece. Is that not a short-movie? What if it was over 75 minutes in length? What if it was shot with an old Hi8 camera?

What if it's a non narrative documentary ala Ron Fricke's films...but shot with the iphone.

Where do you people draw the line between videos and movies?

As far as I'm concerned, there's videos, flicks, movies, and films.

Video- "Man gets football to crotch" on Youtube

Flick- Independent shorts, features, stuff that took REAL money and effort to make.

Movie- Transformers, The Hangover, Sex and the City (this category could also be called "Flicks")

Film- No Country for Old Men, The Wrestler, The Fountain (get the picture?)

Now, this is an extremely subjective categorization of cinema, but that's how I see things. The iPhone 4 video I saw about the girl with her grandpa and the train set? I'd be quick to call it a Video, but because there was meat to the story, I'd call it a Flick. And the differentiation between the categories is a complete gray area. Just because something has the production value of a Flick doesn't mean it can't be a film, so story is a huge factor.

These categories ignore the "It's a film because they shot on film" argument, which is valid, but more of a purist view of things :-) Like when people get pissed when someone says "We're filming today" even though they're actually taping or shooting...

Good content is good content, bad content will always be bad content. Doesn't matter what its shot on.

Thats exactly my point

why would you shoot good content on a bad camera ?

Because it's what's available? Not everyone has the money/know how/saintly patience to wait for a scarlet :emote_popcorn:

I'll give my own definitions:

video: some dude shooting shallow depth of field flowers in his garden/rolling wave landscapes on vimeo as a camera test, football in the groin on youtube.

film: Nosferatu, Metropolis, a movie made for $25,000 shot on an SRII in Bucharest about a dysfunctional family meeting for a funeral where everybody's rotten secrets are revealed.

movie: Fat Bitch, A Blaffair to Rememblack, Black Cop/White Cop, Who dat Ninja?

As per the dictionary

movie |ˈmoōvē|
noun
a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and shown in a theater or on television; a motion picture.
• ( the movies) a movie theater : we decided to go to the movies.
• motion pictures generally or the motion-picture industry : a lifelong love of the movies.

So the question is the web a format that equals to the cinema and TV?

To some degree, doesn't the phrase "Feature length film" exist to help make this distinction?

The iPhone 4 video I saw about the girl with her grandpa and the train set?

I would call this a Vignette.

Interesting though is that it seems there is an increase in this style of story telling through "filmmaking".

Now, many of the "video clips" I see online seem, to me, to be the video equivalent of photo "snapshots", meant to capture a moment in time & place.

The skateboarder doing a trick, or the seagull at the beach, a sunset, etc. Movies? IMO, I don't think so. Maybe time to coin a phrase for video "snaphot"?

"Docushort" perhaps? They document a moment in time, but don't tell a narrative story. They're all technically "movies" to me, however. I don't see what the crisis is.

Yeah, there's no emergency.

I was addressing the OP regarding the definition of a "movie" and see this as a reflection of the changing world of media and motion pictures in particular.

Defining something, creating a word or phrase to describe it, can help create a common understanding of the concept, but the danger is in the definition becoming a limiting idea.

I'm excited to see people having the opportunity to explore the world of visual communication through motion pictures. Seeing all the imagery being captured, whether recorded as is or created from an idea, really amazes me.

As impressive as big "Hollywood" (there's another "word" for you!) productions can be, I'm more interested in what an individual person is capable of these days. That's where all the change seems to be happening, at least in my eyes.
