  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Movie-Camera Maker Red Accuses Rival Arri of Corporate Espionage

we knew it was coming... it really is sad news and bad business. not going to end well.

Personally, I hope it's something that is worked out behind closed doors and doesn't spill onto sets. As we all know, there is already some negativity on sets, when people bash on one camera or the other. I'd hate to see this get worse. I believe once a camera has been chosen for the job people need to get behind that choice and help the production get the most out of it. Doesn't matter if it's RED, Alexa, F65, HVX200, whatever.

Hopefully this ends in the courtroom and the two companies move on, pushing each other in a healthy, honest way.

I'm with Mr. Sherrick on this one. Very nicely said, sir. (and seeing your from Boston, go Pats!)

+1 Agreed.

+ 0,8 agreed. Although I too believe civility is in order on set, this sort of reprehensible behaviour on the part of Arri (if proven true in court) shouldn't stay behind closed doors. A hush hush attitude never serves the underdog well, even with a verdict in its favor. It should be loud, and it should be proud.

Yes both companies build tools for artists to create great things, but they're also running competing businesses. And ultimately, there is no such thing as friendly competitors.

That's my humble two cents anyway.

at the same time, we need to be respectful and strongly discourage rampant speculation. we do not know all the facts, at all. we need to let the big boys play with this one, and until more information is provided, we need to allow the court system to speculate and uncover the truth. we should already be practicing forgiveness.

"Friendly competition" absolutely exists! Just look at this web forum--every DP or colorist in Southern California, New York etc is in friendly competition with everyone else from the area, yet we all help each other out.

I really wish this hadn't happened, as Red and Arri could have worked together to provide the right system for the right job. Panavision and Arri were never hacking e-mails and making disparaging comments about one another.

Having just read the complaint in its entirety, there is absolutely no reason to speak a word against Arri as a company. The actions of three executives--and possibly a handful of techs on Hansel and Gretel--have little to do with the hardworking engineers, salespeople and service techs who just want to go to work in the morning.

exactly why this is so devastating. however, it's no secret that arri has been one of the biggest sources of FUD against RED, especially in european territories. if such allegations are true, that coupled with questionable business ethics and practices is more than enough to start losing a lot of respect for a seemingly well established company. the hardworking engineers and employees put their trust in the company and its leaders, perhaps wrongly so. a day of reckoning approaches, and it does not bode well for arri and its constituents...

I remember well that I was warning RED here at the forum years ago about a strange kind of behavior from the competitor but nobody was taking me serious then suddenly the sh*t happened.

The competitor is pushing hard on many other fronts like Academy Award for Best Cinematography eventually to get something significant out of it.

We can see the both things how will they finish very soon???!!!

Fingers crossed and hope RED will win at the court.

And I guess that Academy Award for Best Cinematography For 2012 should again get a movie that was shot on film.

Also 2012 should be year of 4K and a kind of new friendship relation between RED and most famous cinematographers in the world.

This situation was not our 1st choice... trust me. When details emerge I think most people will be stunned at the severity and extent of the hacking. My bet is that we won't be the only plaintiff. Sad days...

Jim

I too am sad about this.

:(

Thanks for posting the complaint.. after reading it.. just whoa!!!

But what really strikes me, is not that it happend, but the amount of pure amateurism at work..

let me explain:

i make my money at the moment as a consultant to penetration-test IT Infrastructures, so i'm well aware of the way systems are hacked.. and trust me, the amount of industrial espionage going on daily makes you very paranoid..
but normally hacking is not done using the private or business computer especially not while using your real IP Adress... this Guy was just incredible stupid.. good for the prosecutors..
but very sad for all believers in a strong and diverse competition that brings technology further for our all benefit..

my respect for handling that case the whole time the most civilised way i can imagine to Jim and Jarred.. i would have started the nukes
thanks for pushing the boundaries of the possible and bending the impossible and not resorting to FUD and Marketing once you had your name..

So happy to make my dreams come true!!

Have a excellent 2012 and best regards

I've read all the way through the complaint and although I am no lawyer, It appears that there are a lot of dimensions to this case that had not been previously revealed and are very damning. The fact that RED was in acquisition talks with Band Pro is very significant. As companies conduct these talks and do their due diligence, strict confidentiality and non-disclosure is considered mandatory. The fact that the veil of confidentiality was pulled back and confidential business information about both companies was revealed to RED's competitor will prove to be a huge problem for Arri and Mr. Bravin.
