  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More SSD questions $$$$$

If I may:

There are things about this that dont make sense...RC42 is a 7.5:1 on Red MX and it looks gorgeous, amazing. In fact, even when pixel peeping on high-detail high-contrast scenes on MX I can BARELY tell a difference between RC36 and RC42, we are way into the curve of diminishing returns.

You can barely tell the difference because it's a 16.7 % increase of data.

So 7.5:1 on Epic is 60MB/s at 2:1 or 52MB/s at 2.37:1 (per Jim's post), why do you think 5:1 is a necessity? 5:1 would be the equivelent of RC63 on Red1MX and I just can't fathom why you'd want that unless you have an enormously high detail VFX shot (basically very rarely).

No one stated it is a necessity, sensor can provide a lot more "thickness" of the negative than the one 10:1 can capture. 5:1 for this type and efficiency of compression presents "the sweet spot", perception of which is relative to priorities. It's not just the picture detail.

If buying into the SSDs is an issue, maybe Epic is not the best choice of camera for such a small budget.

I don't think the issue is SSD. Everyone likes the idea of SSD and agrees that the extra cost id worth it.

If you wanted 1:1 you could bring some fiber optic cables to the set with a Fridge full of drives to be able to record those data rates.

This push for Uncompressed is nothing less than over "squeekyness". It's those people that always start a sentence with "Yeah, but..."

"We have 5:1 recode."

"Yeah but I want 1:1 Redode."

Which is not even possible. The whole concept of REDCODE does not even allow for uncompressed because it is based on mathelmatically lossless wavelett based compression schemes.

And mathelmatically lossless is actually lossless.

I don't know if this has already been answered somewhere, but I'd like to know what typical transfer times are for, say, a 128GB SSD vs 128GBs of data from the RED RAID. In other words, I'd like to know how much faster the transfers take place....
