  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More news...

Well, I was thinking about Scarlet in general, even though, with the bigger sensors brains, having the camera changing the focus in-time and the subject reaching is mark would be quiet difficult because of the smaller Depth of Field.

But you need electronic lens control for that.

So we are either talking about the Fixed Scarlet or the FF35 with future RED electronic lenses, or an integration with a future Birger for Epic/Scarlet.

According to the spec sheet, the lens mounts that RED is going to release will have the electronic interface with them.

Damn! All good news!!! 250fps at 2K, that'll be sweet, even if mostly for freakshow purposes!

Really Greats News

All options are GREATS. Those who aren't agree with Optical VF, simply: Don't buy it. But i'm sure that there are people who think that OVF is essential for his job, and now RED have it.

For me, the most important of RED ONE is the concept. And this is next step of that concept. This features make RED EPIC a faultless PRO System. Nobody could say that the camera dod'nt have this or that. I heard it several times about RED ONE, and it was always compared with 20 times more expensive system. RED ONE make it work at least as good as them, and now it will done it significantly better without any option less. Actually thousands more...

Great job again RED People. Congratulations and sincere thanks as a Filmaker.

2. A new EPIC/Scarlet OVF (optical viewfinder) module is in development.

Jim

Wow, sounds great, but how will this optical viewfinder work the way the cameras are designed?
Won't there be any shift between what we see and what is recorded?
Maybe not with a long lens but in close-ups, extreme close-ups or macro?
Thanks

Wow, I missed this thread. It is starting to get exiting again! Optical EVF on Red! Niiiicee!!

Hope we start to see things soon. Hope all is going great with development!

Jim, looks like you could charge at least $15,000 for the OVF and people will gladly pay.

I would not!

Although an OVF is a good move to satesfy the old timers, and everyone migrating from the hardcore 35mm world - the way of the future is digital aquistion, and the only way to see that as correctly as possible is through a monitor/EVF - digitally.

It´s the way of the future
It´s the way of the future
It´s the way of the future

Having said that I am extremly excited about the upcoming systems, and ready to go in on a seconds notice, but an OVF is not on my list.

I am overjoyed at the concept of using just the bare bone pieces and a prime, like a stillscamera, and record 5K (for a limited time), which I haven´t had confirmed yet, but looks very much like it will happen with EPIC-X.

I liked the Aviator too.

The main advantage to an OVF would be the lack of image delay when operating.

Using an EVF will always create some amount of visual delay which at the end of the day does affect your reaction time in a shot.

Our OVF will be expensive. There is no getting around it. Lots of engineering and expensive mechanical stuff.

It seems we have customers that want it which is why it is in development. But make no mistake... it will not be cheap. And it will require service unlike an LCD or EVF.

We just have to be real about this...

As a long time operator I think this is a (pardon the pun) red herring. In most cases you have to be anticipating framing by 1/8 to 1/4 of a second anyway, so any latency under 1/24 of a second is not the problem. How fast do you think your reactions are? I usually try and stay a half beat ahead of the action anyway. Maybe I'm just odd :out:

I get the advantage of seeing fine focus better on an OVF but if the focal plane is so short that you can't see it at 720P wouldn't you just rather have a good 1st AC / puller anyway? Just sayin'.

Cheers - #19

I'm just messin' with you guys. But I do know how much this stuff costs, and the engineering is pretty intense. And like Jim said, you'll have to service the thing often. You can't maintain minute tolerances on a part that's spinning and stopping all the time without it. Maybe Red could outsource the servicing to Techs in the Valley or Hollywood to improve turnaround times? Just a thought.

Can you say mirror? Mayyybe? Sure sounds like moving parts.
