  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More news...

The sequential color flashing of the EVF plays tricks on my eyes sometimes. If I look straight into the EVF and don't let my eye dart about, I'm fine. It's similar to the "rainbow" effect of many, especially older, DLP TV's and projectors. Some people see them, some people don't. I'm curious to know if the new bomb EVF will use a different method of projecting the image. I'd upgrade for that reason alone. That and the smaller form factor... But Jim had me with the 12-bit color too...

Doesnt the D21 already have an OVF? So...I dont see how that can be holding him back from using that system

ahh, and perhaps therein lies the clue. It IS a digital STILL motion capture system afterall.

while I understand (and agree) with your point about digital acquisition, perhaps high end photogs prefer OVF? That's my guess.

as Graeme stated the goal was "STILL and MOTION = SAME QUALITY"

250 fps !!! Scream baby..this is great

possible optical viewfinder designs

possible optical viewfinder designs

Yes I left out prisms but I can't imagine anyone is willing to take the light loss, optical loss, weight or cost of that either.

A lot of people seem to have been excited about the 5DII and the new 7D, which have prisms and ground glass. Now, admittedly the DSLR optical viewfinder doesn't work in live view/movie mode. But those cameras aren't especially heavy, or even that expensive, all things considered. As far as I know, all you need to add is a pellicle beamsplitter to make that design work during image capture.

What would be very handy is if there was a way to control the transmission/reflection ratio of a beamsplitter electronically... wouldn't that be convenient?

i wonder how the 2k of EpicX will compare to the 2k of Red

I leave the forums for one day and look what happens! I am really really curious about how you guys are going about to make the OVF. I'm excited to see what you come up with. Touchscreen LCD's should be perfect for menu nav. Looking forward to seeing/working with and buying it all! haha

I doubt he has to worry about what he labels his stuff.

I sure hope that is not a photoshop.

It's not. Google Image search N2T. You'll see the previous Oakley designs too.

PS. Jim, I didn't mean to derail the thread, but for someone who used to work at an airport your Global is wicked awesome.

RED is announcing the addition of several new pieces to the EPIC and Scarlet modular system.

1. The new Bomb EVF. 1/3 the size and weight of the original EVF with improved image quality. Can be used with EPIC, Scarlet or RED ONE systems.

2. A new EPIC/Scarlet OVF (optical viewfinder) module is in development.

3. New rods/rails, base plate and handheld system.

4. New battery technology that works in the accessory side handle and/or battery modules. You can also use RED Bricks with EPIC and Scarlet.

5. New types of flash memory recording modules along with CF card modules.

6. New Pro I/O module.

7. New LCDs, including two touch screen versions.

These are all in addition to the Mysterium-X sensor program that has significantly more dynamic range, higher useful ISO, and less noise than the RED ONE Mysterium sensor.

The EPIC and Scarlet system share all modules and are independently upgradeable. Upgrade only what you want/need as technology advances.

EPIC-X is 5K at 100fps with REDCODE 250. 4K and Quad HD at 125fps. 3K at 160fps. 2K at 250fps.

Jim

Jim,

The real killer announcement is Optical Viewfinder, which till date the DPs in India find it difficult to work on Red One and they counter for Arri D21.

250fps at 2K excellent. Is Red challenging Phantom nearby!

srry about my name, could a moderator plz change it? Well ive been reading this forum for about 6 months now and as u can see i havent posted much. I just wanted to say how excited i am about joining red hopefully next year with a fixed scarlet. Even though i may not use all these new advancements, The speed at which red works is just astounding. My hat is off to you guys. OH man this is frickin awsome....

Thanks to the moderator that changed my name.

Nice! Only yesterday i discussed the 3 new cameras that ARRI is promising for next summer release a small HD for 50K. a 4K with EVF and a flagship with OVF. I said that they are way behind RED and the only thing so far is the OVF (as a note i hate all types of VF) but now even that is gone :)... Poor ARRI.

Ooo...great news, guys.

The color-seperation (aka "Rainbow") is tied directly to the refres rate of the display. Lots of folks who see rainbows with 2-3x sped DLP's (including me) don't see them at 5-6x refresh rates.

(With 1x = a single cycle thru the primary colors per frame)

I'd guess that Jim's mentioning "faster scan rate" as an improved aspect of the Bomb EVF makes it likely that this will lessen the rainbow effect...

November 2 Tango is a beauty. My brother has a couple thousand hours in the Global Express, a few hundred as Captain. Now he flies 737's.

What I wonder is, will we all do the Tango in November when Epic and Scarlet officially boot up?
