  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More news...

If Roger placed an order with 12 of his friends, we would make him one :)

Still not a single taker yet...

Jared...

What about Soderbergh, Fincher, Liman, other high profile DPs and directors?

It surprises me that you can't find a bunch of people that would place a deposit for one.

Well, that must mean that they are quite happy with their LCDs and EVFs...

That's what I would think. I understand why most all don't see a need to buy one, I thought some high profile DPs would want one just to have one...just in case. Also, I thought a few higher end rental houses would jump all over that. It seems logical to me that they'd want to buy a few so they can offer something others don't have...

old schoooool is out forever...

sorry couldn't resist I heard that song on TV recently:tongue_smilie:

I really couldn't care less for an ovf. RED has made all best electronic tools available to judge what kind of electronic picture you get out of the camera. What's the point of looking through an ovf first, to then finding yourself looking at an LCD or Evf to see if what you like in the ovf actually is worth a penny in post? I love my ovf on my old 35mm slr. And I love the new electronic tools on our RED. Because they work. They do what they should do, and that is to show whether what you are shooting is what you are looking for. And I think the Evf and LCD live up to that task. Even when flipped upside down and inside out. With all due respect :)

Just a few thoughts:

A good EVF or LCD shows you pretty much what and how the sensor is seeing; optical viewfinders do not.

EVFs and LCDs can show a great deal of additional useful information.

OVFs are already a stop under, and when the lens is stopped down, they are really dark.

OVFs are rather cumbersome, are tied to the camera whereas EVFs and LCDs can be placed anywhere.

OVFs are expensive and can't be used for all shutter angles.

I'm an old dog, but I certainly appreciate new tricks.

I suspect that many who said they wanted an OFV had second thoughts when the time came to step up to the chalk.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Hi Jarred,

How do non camera owners go about placing an order? What is the price & expected delivery date for non Red One owners?

Thanks,

Stephen

If someone doesn't tell us, can we spot if a movie is shot using an ovf?

Yes, you may well see the film grain!
Then I want one.:w00t:

Heh, heh, just was thinking it's more like comfort food for "experienced" DPs. On a low budget movie, maybe the producer should just spring for some Campbell's soup breaks for the DP's comfort?

That's because it's not a TTL OVF.

In order of usefulness (my opinion):

TTL OVF
EVF
Non-TTL OVF
LCD

TTL is Through The Lens. What kind of OVF would not be looking through the lens? There are pellicule OVF's like my old Auricon with a type A Angenieux, prism OVF's like my old Bolex, and mirror shutter OVF's like ARRI film cameras.

OVF's just don't make much sense on a digital camera vs a true high quality EVF.

It can be a really fast way of working, no waiting for video villiage to be ready! It's also very easy to judge lighting & look without any 'input' to be 'safe' etc.

The latest rumor told us that Alexa project could cancelled production OVF.

Upcoming IBC 2010 in Amsterdam can probably confirm or denied that kind of rumor.

OVF is expensive to develop and produce also demand is still pretty in a low level even for Alexa that is HD digital camera

beloved and ordered mostly from a hardcore Arri (analog) film camera users that as we know all have OVF as a standard...

D20 and D21 were all made with OVF but as we know that those cameras were to expensive and a kind of "trouble makers" for Arri digital wider consumer acceptance.

Alexa probably wants to make it different...!!!???

My opinion is if there is a demand for it then build it, I would love to have one, but can't afford it at the moment, but hey, there are those that want and can afford it....
May be make a pre-order option, see how many orders you get, make them put a down payment, and see if demand will pay for all the R&D you need to put into it actually working, and who knows, may be after you actually build it, you might sell more than originally planned, as I said, for example I can't afford it at the moment, but I also could not afford the original RED One when it was first offered (remember that 1000 usd down payment?) and yet, today I have spent more that I could have ever thought I would ever have on RED products...
