  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More HDRx...

Jim, there has been some concern over on the theforce.net fanfilm boards as to that video, specifically his feet. We cant tell if this is Magic Motion or just compression artifacts, because it looks an awful lot like strait up ghosting. Some feel this could be a "deal breaker." Can you shed any light on it?

That's motion blur

Jim, why did you bother making Epic modular? I think you nailed it first go! Looks great. Well done to all.

This would be why you would consider the Foundry solution.

Been imagining this kind of footage on the big screen at RED Hollywood - and I can only imagine that it might put the whole 3D thing a little out of business.

I'm sure there is near-3D texture when you blow this sucker up and stretch its pixels to fill a really big space. You probably feel like you could crawl right into it.

Just thinkin out loud.

My goal was to build a worthy replacement for film. That meant with regards to resolution, dynamic range and "feel". "Social Network" has shown that the "resolution and feel" are there. As far as dynamic range... there is now nothing close.

Way to go Jim. AWESOME. This is a game changer. You just slammed Arri to the mat.

Thanks for everything you guys are doing.

I watched the clip and refuse to believe I'm the only one interested in the flickering through the slats.

Michael, it's not the light from the slats flickering. The artifact is still there, after the camera pans past the slats. It's also curved. You'll also notice the same thing is in the other four corners. Its a vignette. The vignette on all the corners get brighter and darker depending on how much light is showing through.

Sorry if I've missed it, but could you post the single-stream of this for comparison?

HDRx and EasyHDR are in development. There is no way we are going to post early files other than the 3MB "Export for web" files we have just shared. It isn't fair to Graeme or the rest of us to get picked apart when we still have so much to do. These are early prototype executions you are seeing. Just like our color science... it will get better as we have time to work on it.

Don't ask for high res streams, R3Ds or anything else. You are not likely to see them until we are ready. In the meantime, we will post snippets along the way.

Jim, that's a good reply!

How are you feeling now in regards to HDRx being a feature on ship of Epic? I seem to recall earlier you saying Epic would ship without it. But now it seems like feature #1 :-)

I imagine the most amazing thing about the HDRx™ latitude will be the grading possibilities, with 2 streams and increased bit depth its going to be unbelievably flexible, film like s curves on normal contrast scenes with rolled off highlights almost never clipping. Can't wait. Not that grading red one (even my non mx ) footage is limited. EPIC will change film making for me again. Backpackable / handholdable worlds best camera that can shoot in the dark, extreme contrast high speed etc. Science fiction.

Truly Amazing work by Red.

EPIC will ship with HDRx.
