  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More HDRx...

When is the Lull going to end? teh heh heh.

Jim, I am currently plotting and scheming my way to getting €6000 for you guys, good choice with the HDRX for an extra €1000, well done team red. Thanks for sharing, ignore the haters/annoyers/doubters. That motion shot is an unbelievable/ungettable shot.

Game Changer.

Will.

Oh boy...this wait is gonna hurt. Just had to login and say Jim - you are THE man. This is just astounding:sifone:

Jim,

Does this new feature create 2 separate images? If so how does this effect the file size and the storage capacity when you are effectively capturing the same footage twice. Am I getting this all wrong? What is the work-flow for shooting HDRx with the RED? Using twice the disc space and halving your available frame rate (i.e. 120fps without HDRx 60fps with) sounds like a drawback for shooting HDRx. Please correct me Jim and shed some LIGHT on this. (pardon the pun). :)

No one knows how much light there was in the barn... except Pete, Mick and I.

I have posted a lot and people can decide whether or not to believe me, but there was NO light in that barn. I am so blown away that I can hardly stand it. I'm so excited that I can't sleep. You will see for yourself soon.

Jim

Jim - I'm just smiling from ear to ear thinking about how people laughed back at NAB 2006. You can beat yourself up for being "late" - or you can consider the fact that you and your team have done more in four years than most people do in a lifetime.

HDRx + REDCODE = best tech in digital cinema and motion photography

Period.

I am so ready to kick some serious ass with this camera -

I think Gavin is trying to say typically in image processing advantages are gained in the expense of something else. There are a lot of examples of this: Many advertised codecs are fine until one tries to do some keying. Sharpening is fine while still the emphasized edges with increased contrast throw away details. The same happens with noise filters; Shoot 30 frames of the dark sky with stars using exposure time of 1s, noise filter the frames and then add them arithmetically up. The result is not the same as one 30s exposure. Guess, if the compression rate is high enough, the same "change in noise character" also happens if one tries to add up arithmetically wavelet compressed files.

All engineering is about seeking for trade-offs and compromizes. So, all professional engineers have at the first place a reasonable and also justified doubt of "in expense of what". I'm afraid, arguing about this will not change anything. However, when enough evidence is there, the very same people tend to highly appreciate the achievements of the developers.

We know HDRx is not the same as a sensore with 18 stops of dynamics. What are the possible compromizes, if any, are not yet announced. But the very fact that we seriously talk of and some argue about 18 stops is itself remarkable. Who would have guess that 6 months ago?

Jim,

Am I getting this all wrong? What is the work-flow for shooting HDRx™™™ with the RED? Neil,

MX is an amazing achievement of the image sensor technology.

You can push and pull images very comfortably with this sensor and if later you are using right tools you can get rid of noise or other artifacts.

For example you can do HDR from your RED1-MX motion images but this would take a huge amount of time and storage to

process thousands of non compressed 16 bit tiff files in one of HDR photo enchanter applications.

Probably HDRx™ with EPIC and SCARLET is doing many things already during time of camera recording thanks to the new made hardware

and also later with new RED tools in post you would be able get what you wanted.

Here below is one example from one frame that shot on RED1-MX and later was made HDR image from 4 images with different exposures outputted from RCX and then combined in HDR using Photomatix Pro app.

Above is the image from QT proxy M file and below is the image HDR enchanted from batch of four images that each had a different FLUT...

HDR_M.jpg

Shot on RED1-MX with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 @ 11mm/f8, captured @ ISO100 and 4 x times processed in RCX @ FLUT -1.5, +1.5, +2.5, + 3.0, 25fps, 1/50, no filters.

Also right now I included R3D snapshot from my sample shown here

so everybody can download and try for yourself

Jim. Ok Now I want to rob a bank and pay double the price for you to sell me Four Epics!!!!!

Hey Jim. Could I sugest that you stop with this feature, finish the camera let us buy out your stock and you could add as you go along. We want the camera. We are confidant that you and your tam can deliver a solid camera in four months if you stop adding more features to what is already a first walk on an unknown planet. Add them later. Imagine Sony a competitor is making $23 million in on weekend with Social Network on the Epic Why do we want more than this AT THE MOMENT. Sure Brin it on with features but let me upgrade. If i make 1% of what Sony is making hey I ill more than buy an upgraded Epic. We are loyalists to RED Jim but everything changes including roadmaps. Settle what you have now and ship. Revolutionary it already is. Add the rest in an EpicX or whatever.

What say you Jim :) :) :)

Did not read the entire thread as I'm prepping today and want to get an early start, so excuse me if this has been asked already.

Dark interior? No bounce? No giant door behind the camera to let in ambient light?

If that's the case, I'm speechless. Even if there is some ambient coming in from the other side, it's pretty amazing. The exterior should be many stops over exposure to get that level inside the barn.
Please take your time with Epic. This is worth the wait!
Cheers,
Harry

I think the easiest way to show people how revolutionary this is (for those who don't get it) would simply be to take an off the shelf RED ONE MX and shoot the same shot without the HDRx bonus. Side by side, it would be painfully obvious how much of an advantage this really brings you.

That is unless you're scared of making the RED ONE look bad. :P

We have raised the price of 2/3" Scarlet so that we can include this technology. We think it is totally worth it. Groundbreaking from where we sit.

Jim

Thank you very much for this. I am so looking forward to this camera.
