  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More HDRx...

Wow. This picture is the best I have seen that really shows the importance of the HDRx. So glad Scarlet is getting this. I would love to see a comparison of this image with a non HDRx image to really see how much of an incredible different this makes.
 
Also it needs sufficient detail to find a pattern. If you take something like a phone spinning quickly the highlights moving across the surface will be read as the vectors and it becomes impossible to predict the morph form of the reflected light card. The only way to really capture a quickly rotating reflective object is going to be in native motion blur.

Perhaps it was the aerial that needed to be shot at 5k so the software could pick branches apart. Was it 1080? :)

About the quickly rotating reflective object, I am not sure I follow. But if it turns out that there is an issue, you would see it on the screen I suppose, and you would then light within M-X's DR. You know, old school. ;)

I was just asking because you had me worried for a bit! For a second it sounded like it could be all over!

Thank you for nit-picking aloud. Hope it turns out to be as little of an issue as it sounds, and hope you look into it and post once you get a camera to test with.

I personally will shoot HDRx every time and in every situation.

The only thing that worries me is needing double the storage for personal or small production use, but I suppose with hard drives doubling in capacity every year... :)
 
Social Network was shot without HDRx and on REDCODE 42. I think you are fine...

Jim - sorry if it's already been asked and answered... When you want to select a very short shutter time for a shot - HDRx™ will still work OK, with the same DR expansion?

Up to 1/96th shutter base exposure.

We didn't take a meter with us... ugh.

But it didn't take a rocket scientist to see that there was no way to hold the exposure inside and out. Peter has been shooting for almost as long as I have. Mick about half as long. There was no way to hold both inside and out with any camera that we have ever shot. This was a DARK barn and brilliant noon-day sun outside.

I told the guys that no one would believe this...

Even in the UK we have this issue, believe it or not. I've used XDCAM HD, DVCPro, Betacam SP, DVCAM... you name it. Certain situations you are thrown in to you will have to sacrifice parts of the image just so other parts are exposed correctly. Its always had to be a fine balance. Some shoots for corporate clients you can't just wip up some lighting rig and you don't have the budget for a massive American style corporate shoot with loads of crew. It is just you and your camera most of the time.

I don't want to sacrifice parts of my image just so I can get the right exposure of the subject I'm filming. Lens filters can only do so much with poor lighting.

This is how it would have been on a standard broadcast camera such as XDCAM.

I think we are witnessing here a major improvement of cameras. This is not an incremental step but instead genuine progress. You know, this is a historical moment in this sense: A new technical solution that in a smart way overcomes the existing limitations. Before the news of HDRx thought that it Monstro is the earliest possible solution for enough dynamics. It's such a surprise that there was a way around this and that in addition this solution has such a nice effect on how motion appears in the images. Yet to see whether there are some exceptions the HDRx mode cannot tackle that well, but what ever is the case, find this a significant major improvement exceeded all the dreams I've ever had for Epic-X.

After this point every camera manufacturer will try to develop something similar, and everybody who does not have the equipment and is forced to clip highlights or to throw draks in complete black will desire a Red camera.
 
This is going to redefine our visual language. Ever since cinema and photography have been around, we have learned to expect low dynamic ranges, clipped highlights, etc. DPs and photogs have learned not only to live with it but also to use it for artistic effect. I'm sure there will be some purists who dismiss HDR(x) as a gimmick... Just like talkies, color, and 3D have all been dismissed as gimmicks... But this will be the norm, no doubt about it.

And I'm sure there will be people, even twenty years from now, who will refuse to use it... Just like there are some cases when you shoot black and white today. But yeah, this looks like the future.

Still can't budget for the extra grand, sorry.
 
Oh, btw., I've been wondering... Is Apple following these threads or what? Is it a coincidence that HDR was a new surprise feature in iOS 4.1?

I would say these threads have 0% to do with anything what Apple does. :)
 
It's kind of ironic that those who are worried about the extra $1000 for HDRx on the Scarlet are amongst those who will benefit from it most as presumably they wont have access to the crew and lighting required to achieve this type of shot otherwise. To me it's the additional delay that frustrates the most.

Agreed, but I don't really care about the price, and actually I don't mind the wait that much either. Will have to take a loan to buy it anyway. I had 5000 USD set aside for scarlet, but I spent it already :rofl:
 
Jim, shooting easyHDR is there a processing hit playing back the files? Or is that only when you take the post option?
 
The first law of image processing is that you can never manufacture data.

Easy way to break MNMB. Go fire some tracer rounds in the desert at night. The trackers won't be able to find a pattern.

Very fast moving objects might only be in frame for one a single frame. No amount of special sauce will be able to track that.

Just two quick examples. Almost every example would be an 'outlier' from normal shooting scenarios but I would like to see some HDRx™™™ footage of a grinder on steel. Nothing could track it reliably.

Also texture which is repeating tends to throw it for a loop. I've had forests for instance break every optical flow motion blur solution I've thrown at it. Again it's not an effort to knock The Foundry or RED. I love both. I'm a total fanboy for The Foundry's technology. But they also aren't wizards. ;)

There is actually a pretty good discussion on the Nuke User mailing list right now (including input I believe from Foundry developers) discussing the merits of motion blur in post.

Gavin, I think the thing you're missing here is that this data is not being manufactured. There are no artefacts - this isn't "motion blur in post". It's motion blur in camera. How hard is it to get your head around this? The camera takes two exposures (seemingly synchronous), one exposure much longer than the other. Therefore one with more motion blur than the other. The two shots (when using HDRx™) are then available to you to combine as you wish. The shorter one gives you sharpness and the longer one blur.

The tools you're used to using cannot, in any way, be compared to how this Magic Motion™ is achieved. It's organic - not generated by number crunching algorithms. Scheesch. Some people think so much their brains boil.
