  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monstro's here, what do we do for a long & fast zoom?

I agree with Dan, Phil and Tom about DOF needs. And I think Monstro is really 1600 ISO.

Does Angenieux have some program to convert your 12:1 to the larger image circle version without having to pay for a new lens

Hmm, When you add an extender you loose light and add focal length.

So before you go and buy a costly extender make sure to do your own testings as you can reach the same result by trading resolution for light and on monstro you got plenty of resolution.

In other words: Is that extender at 8k giving you a better endresult than shooting 7k or 6k without the extender?

The result of such test depends on the light levels you shoot in, and the quality of the zoom and the extender.

I think for a lot of scenarios croping down on the sensor is not only the most simple option but also leaving the best end results.

Bjorn, Your thoughts on this seem to be worth testing. At this point I'm testing the Tokina Expander against "windowing down" on the sensor to get the coverage. Time will tell, and I'll report back.

Peter, I need to check with Angenieux on an upgrade option. Good thought.

Cool,
Yes would be great to see same framings from the two at wide open. and preferably with some low exposure parts of the frame and some refernces for depth of field.

Has anyone tried Fujinon Premier Zooms with Monstro? any notes on coverage out there?

I have tried Fujinon Premiere zooms on Helium and Dragon. They barely cover 7K 2:1 on Helium. They cover 5K on Dragon. Of course as one zooms in, the image circle expands. Above 40mm, the 24-180mm will cover 8K on Helium and 6K on Dragon, but I'm not even going to bother trying to see what that circle is on Monstro. There are much more sensible 70-200 zoom solutions for Monstro than the last bit of a 24-180 Premiere zoom, even if it did cover!

I've ordered the Tokina expander which should arrive later this week.

In the meantime, I put up the 24-290 with a 1.4 extender. It covers 7.5KHD (which works for what I need) with just the smallest hint of a vignette at 24mm, only focused on infinity, less then 10' is clean. That with a one stop hit in light, but none with DOF, being the extender behaves as if the lens is at 2.8. Just looking at a monitor, image looks great.

I'm curious to see how the expander works being 1.3 stops of light loss. I assume the DOF would be the same relative to 2.8, same as the extender.

I'll get to testing side by side when I get my hands on the expander.

I guess eventually I'll need to have the files pixel peeped to see which is the better option. Although I'm not set up for that evaluation with my limited resources and knowledge when it comes to post stuff.

I would be happy to look in between the pixels and make some sort of comparision. Away from keyboard until monday but if you upload a r3d snap from each it should be possible to determain the difference in between the two on monday. Curious my self used extenders but never actually took the time to do this relativly easy test and as monstro has such high quality pixels and so many it makes even more to test what works better.

You can cover VV with the Fujinon Premier 18-85 f2.0 and a S35 to 8K expander from IB-E optics. I have both if you wanted to try, let me know. Best!

I tested a 1.2x expander against our 1.4X PL2PL tele converter and did not see any IQ advantage. The 1.4x increased the coverage from the 1.2x about 15% at the expense of 1/3 of a stop- as expected.

jacek, Would love to see a frame from each on of them and also a frame from the same lens without expander but cropped so there is no vinjette and maxed bit rate on all three and zoom set to give about the same FOV.

To me a resolution hit going from 8k to 6k and using less glass and getting more light and not zoom in .2 or .4 on the lens artifacts and gain as much in light per pixel is worth a lot.

Extending lenses to cover possibly can provide a cool / different character to the image. But with the stop loss and focal length change I Find it difficult to see the gain if not the goal above all else is to capture 8k. Scaling things up at a lens level when we got so much pixel oversampling going. Just dont make sense. But would to actually look at tests as most of my thoughts on this is purely theoretical.

I am expecting the Angēnieux 28 70 T2.8 reingeniered by Kim Optics and the Nikon 80 200 T3 both should cover VV. I will send Frame samples next week
