  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monstro's here, what do we do for a long & fast zoom?

It covers 7.5KHD (which works for what I need) with just the smallest hint of a vignette at 24mm, only focused on infinity, less then 10' is clean. That with a one stop hit in light, but none with DOF, being the extender behaves as if the lens is at 2.8. Just looking at a monitor, image looks great.

I'm curious to see how the expander works being 1.3 stops of light loss. I assume the DOF would be the same relative to 2.8, same as the extender.

I'll get to testing side by side when I get my hands on the expander.

I guess eventually I'll need to have the files pixel peeped to see which is the better option. Although I'm not set up for that evaluation with my limited resources and knowledge when it comes to post stuff.

Stuart, I'm embarrassed to say I never did the test. I bought a 70-200 Zeiss Compact zoom and have been using it more then the 24-290. I sure do miss the range of the Optimo, but only having a 4.5 stop is kind of a "buzz kill". I have been using the Tokina 1.6 expander with my 15-40 Optimo and that works really well. The difference being with the wide zoom I don't find myself wide open as often, for some reason.

Hi,

That's interesting as I found the 70-200 doesn't cover the VV sensor...it vignettes, Zeiss know about this & are in the process of bringing out 3 new CP Zooms or similar that will cover VV & maybe more.

Does the Tokina extender fit the 24-290 & does it cover the MONSTRO? I'd super appreciate if you could test this for me as you have both there with you.

4.5 is a pain, I hear you & even when the faster Leitz Zooms or the Fujinon Premista come out they still don't get near the 10-1 or 12-1 ratio of the Angenieux :(.

I'll be in L.A. next week & prepping at Panavision Hollywood on the 5/7 if you wanted to meet & do the test together? I have a 24-290 & Tokina 1.6 ext on request for the shoot...maybe we can use yours if they're available? Jennifer.Kuwabara@panavision.com is my contact there if you want to reach out to her directly?

Hi Stuart,
I've never seen any vignetting with the 70-200 on the Monstro. That being said I only shoot 8KHD not 8KFF. I'll throw the 24-290 up tomorrow with the 1.6 Tokina and let you know the coverage and how it looks. I know it does mount as I have used it occasionally. Let's use email, it's always more efficient. But I'll post the results here as well in case others are interested.

The Ageniueux EZ zooms are FF and a T3.0. You'll have to swap lenses similar to the CPZ's but are affordable. The new Fuji Premista Zoom (28-100, T2.9) also might be a solid choice for FF zoom.

I looked at the 24-290 with the Tokina 1.6 Expander this morning. No problem fitting everything together and the image looks very good from what can see on the 7" Touch Screen (no pixel peeping). No noticeable sharpness or contrast change. Interestingly, the zoom at 8K with the expander is about the same frame size as the zoom without the expander at 5K.

I also looked at the 70-200 Zeiss Compact Zoom and can see no hard vignetting at 8K FF. Maybe, if you look real hard, some very slight darkening in the corners. But I mean you'd really have to look hard to see it.
 
Better late then never......Here's a quick test of the Tokina 1.6 Expander and the 24-290 Optimo. Clip 15 is 8K with the Expander at 105mm. Clip 16 is 5K no Expander at 105mm. From what I see, surprisingly, there's little or no difference. Maybe someone with pixel peeping know how can have a look and weigh in.

The 8K with the Expander at 105mm looks a slight bit Darker due to light loss from expander ,everything else being equal, than the 5K no Expander at 105mm. But I don't really see a difference either

Thanks, Rand.....Good to know the expander works as it's advertised. It's surprising to me that there's not a big resolution hit when using it. That being said, I think I'll go to it more knowing that aside from the light loss, there's no downside.
 
Can you say that fo sure have you tested this lens with VV?
 
We are trying the old angēnieux photo zoom 28-70 T2.8 modified to PL am no vigneting with MONSTRO
