  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mono Dragon R3D's First Look

Waiting patiently for the dragon mono upgrade program to be announced.... ok not that patiently.

When someone in the Northeast gets one - if you're interested in doing a head to head comparison let me know... I'd be willing to come to your location. I sort of blew my camera budget for 2014 on the Flex4K, but may be able to make a case if it's really as much of an improvement in DR & sensitivity as it looks like it may be.

(nagging my BOMB rep right now to find out when the upgrade program will be out... crossing my fingers hoping there are enough mono Epics to make it worth putting an upgrade kit together).

Yesterday afternoon I took delivery of production Mono Dragon #1 in the USA. Thank you Jarred, Brent, Kelly and the entire RED Team for getting this beast designed, built and delivered!

To me part of the first issue responsibility is to shoot/post raw images that test the extreme edges of the cam for all to see. With that in mind, I went out hunting this afternoon for very high DR and other challenging scenes - stuff that was HDR like in range or had cool gray tones. I shot with one lens, the Canon 17mm TS-E, since I wanted to include architecture in the tests. From my first look at the R3D's tonight I can say that this is the best film sensor I have ever used. I have worked extensively with the PhaseOne products - this is better.

Here are some R3D's you can dig into. Amazing how fat the negatives are. Toss a grade at them!

Great images! I guess the next step for red is to make a non-bayer sensor type of thing with monochrome quality rgb..

Sweeeet! I got lots more from this shoot. Might be June before I can post since it's a fashion premiere
 
Cool. Did you shoot the same subject with a regular Dragon as well? Would be interesting to see how the images compare.

Thanks again Zeb for giving us all these examples to check out. The Monochrome Dragon is a monster. In fact I imagine it could be quite a challenge trying to wrangle all those tones and details it can capture.

Just because it's Dragon Monochrome doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be Monochromatic when all is said and done :)

Seriously though. All this monochrome'n around is making me want one real bad.
