Monkey Extract Questions

I created an XML with the "Create a new EDL or XML for grading...." box ticked and the created XML will instantly crash smoke 2009 when I try to open it. I was able to use the straight out of FCP XML fine but I just thought I would let you know.

Hi Seán_T

Can you please send both XML files to support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I'll take a look.

Thanks
Craig

Hey,

Trying to find a good way to go from FCP to Lustre. My school, Chapman University, has Lustre and Avid and I hate Avid, so trying to go from FCP to Lustre using DPX. Monkey Extract seems like a great way to do that, but being a student, I don't have anywhere near the money it takes to buy it. Do you guys give deals to students? I know we would appreciate it, and certainly spread the word!

Thanks!

Can Monkey Extract convert framerate of the native R3D file from 24 to 23.98 fps

Can Monkey Extract convert framerate of the native R3D file from 24 to 23.98 fps

We're doing dailies and final conform & color for a project shot 90% at 23.98 but one shoot day the crew accidentally shot 24fps. Intended workflow is:
-720 23.98 ProRes proxies
-Cut in Final Cut
-XML conform back to R3D media for final color
-Final Grade & Render
-Output to HDCAM-SR 422 for broadcast @ 1080 23.98psf

Anyone know of a way to convert the problem 24 fps R3D files to 23.98 so that the proxies generated from this footage match the rest of the media and we avoid conform issues down the road? I looked at RedCine, RedRushes & Clipfinder and seems there are a lot of handles for the type of proxy you want to generate but nothing that can alter the native framerate of the original R3D file. Can Monkey Extract do this?

I am aware that I can change the Proxy frame rate for the 24 fps footage from 24 to 23.93 using Cinematools but I think that will cause issues when I try to conform back the 24 fps R3D native the end.

What I'm looking for is a way to convert the native framerate of the 3RD metadata.

Help?

-Paul

You shouldn't need to do this. Both 23.98 and 24 use a 24 frame timebase, and therefore a 24 frame time code base. The fact that they're tagged as different frame rates should not make any difference because indexing into the file based on time code would be indentical. Both of them have 24 frames for every second. The only difference is that one presumes that a second is slightly slower than the other. But the number of frames in that second is the same. The simplest way of ensuring that the conforming and color grading programs accept the mixed frame rates is to go to DPX files for the conform. This creates, in effect, a generic frame sequence that can be played at either frame rate.

We are recommending coloring from the R3D native file & the DP insists on it. Is there seriously no way to alter the R3D metadata from 24 to 23.98?

He can insist on it til he's blue in the face, it won't change the fact that his crew messed up. You cannot change anything in a R3d file unless you happen to be a member of Red's development team. I would strongly suggest rendering the 24 frame clips to DPX and incorporate it in the timeline.

Unable to create new EDL for Grading

Unable to create new EDL for Grading

Hi,

for the moment i am using a trial version of Monkey extract simply to run some tests on some R3D footage.

i created a CMX3600 EDL in Avid, but when i start the rendering in Monkey to make my DPX files it comes up an error message saying "unable to make new EDL for grading" it also says it is unable to "write" to the destination of my saved EDL.

Does anybody know why this would happen, is it possible for me to use my original EDL in conjunction with the DPXs to conform in FLAME?

any help would be appreciated

I'd like to be able to save my render settings so i can quickly come back and render more files from the same project. Is this an option you will add in the future?

Monkey Extract Feature Request

Monkey Extract Feature Request

Using Monkey Extract and it's Qmaster support is working flawless for us, thanks for such a great tool! One thing that would be great to see when doing a batch through Qmaster is to see an actual time remaining on the batch. Currently you can go to the Qmaster Batch Monitor and see what the current frame each render is on, but there is no progress bar, or eta listed.

Anyway, other then that it's a great product.

Hi Everyone,

I now have a preliminary version of Monkey Extract with RedCine support.
If you are interested in trying it out, please check out the 2.305 alpha link on my signature.

Hi Olivia,

This feature is available in the latest build.
Please download the latest version from www.rubbermonkeysoftware.com (there is a download link below)

Hey Craig, how exactly is REDCINE supported in version 2.305?

Hi Colin

When you load your footage and go to the thumbnail screen you'll be able to select clips and send them off to RedCine to render.
Monkey Extract creates shortcuts to your footage so that it is easy to find and load all of your footage.
It also creates the RedCine XML so that you can load your clips up correctly in RedCine... you'll still need to render from RedCine though.

Hello Craig,

I have two questions.

Is there upgrade offer for the single license to the multinode version?

Which RSX parameters remains effective in Monkey Extract?
Is it only color space and gamma space choices? What about ISO, Brightness and other parameters?

Thank you very much in advance.

XML parsing errors

XML parsing errors

Hi Nigel,

I'm having a lot of trouble conforming the XML that Monkey Extract parsed to point to DPX files. Here are the steps:

1. Generate an XML from Final Cut
2. Do the usual "Render RED Footage" stuff in Monkey Extract
3. Import the _for_relink XML into Flame
4. Flame crashes

Flame has no problems importing the original Final Cut XML.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Sorry, a bit more info on the Flame crashing issue:

Hi Hani,

I don't think you're going to have much luck using FCPXML with DPX frames.
FCP doesn't support DPX sequences (without gluetools at least) and so FCP XML doesn't support them well either.

If you are going to DPX I suggest sticking to EDL.
The latest build will also read and write DLEDL for Smoke (just choose CMX3600 when reading these). If you can get your input EDLs into this format it should make life easier as well.

If you'd like to discuss it futher, please send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz

Cheers

Hi there,

We have just added the upgrade option back to the site.
You can check this out at www.rubbermonkey.co.nz

Parameters are applied in the following order:
1> Redline Defaults
2> Metadata (if selected)
3> RSX (if selected - you choose either "color only" or "full RSX")
4> Everything else.

Any options you select will overwrite those before it.

So,.. if don't specify any of the color options manually and select "Apply all RSX settings" then the full RSX should apply.

On the flip side, you can choose an RSX and then manually override any/all of the color settings by specifying your own color options.

So the answer to your question is "it depends..." :)

Thanks Craig,

Purchased the upgrade.
