According to the Build 14 manual, RedFlash should be capable of up to 25fps in 4k 2:1 Redcode 36.

However, I just tried 8 different CF cards (all Red brand) in a row and Red rejected every single one of them as being too slow.

Jim said that 4k 2:1 is fast enough that "some" CF cards can't handle, he said that "one of six" of his failed. (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=158880&postcount=5)

Well I had 8 for 8 fail. So what gives? I don't want to entirely give up on CF just to record 4k 2:1 Redcode 36!

Hey Shawn.. try re-formatting the cards in build 14, if that doesn't work, email us the first 4 serial numbers of your cards so we can check em out.

At what framerate? 24? All four of my cards can handle 4K Redcode 36 2:1 @ 24FPS.

All at 24fps. Just for kicks I changed it to 23.98 and that didn't change anything.

Jarred, I can't re-format any of them. Every single one of them it wouldn't let me re-format, saying that the magazine was too slow.

Don't fret Shawn. You may have just happened to get a bunch of cards that happened to not be up to spec. Whenever you get a flash memory device there's always a chance that your card/stick/whatever is going to be as fast as another card of the same make. It can be caused by anything from a controller change in the card to differences in the flash chips. It's not a defect or a flaw in the cards, just a fact of life with flash memory. There are general performance marks that flash chips will reach but not ALL CF cards of that make or model will always reach the highest recorded speed nor will they all use flash chips from the same physical source (unless there is some contract specified reason for them to do that) to keep the assembly lines from bottlenecking. Given that RED sources the cards from Lexar it's certainly possible that the cards might all come from the same assembly line and it's also possible that they are made in different facilities. The really bitter truth of all this is that it will cost you significant time and money to go through batches of CF cards to find ones that will work. But the good news is that it's not really anyone's fault.

After reading what you just posted it sounds like a card controller issue or the RED camera software needs a reboot and a spanking. Try the cards in something else and see how they perform. If they are non-functional, then they are simply defective.

are you getting the "Framerate too high" error.. or is it the " Media too slow " error?

Success! Of sorts. I was on Build 14 2.0.1. I just updated to Build 14 2.0.3 then formatted the card as 3k then set the project to 4k 2:1 R36 and re-formatted and it worked.

Now I'll go through and try all my cards again.

heh heh.. yeah, build 14 changes the disk magazine log file so you need to reformat the cards with build 14. You can usually just go down to 2k, format, then go back to 4k R28 and format, then it opens it up for you.

Glad you got going again.

It wasn't just Build 14, I was on Build 14 and it wouldn't let me reformat them. Once I upgraded to 2.0.3 of Build 14 then it worked. All 8 cards passed!

yeah you gotta down your resolution, frame rate and/or REDCODE # till it lets you format... its a little tricky as you found out ( beta build ) but it will let you get there eventually without needing to reinstall the build... glad all 8 passed.

Jim,

good job here!

But you're getting a lot of other people who haven't read these tips/tricks for this problem and a dozen other problems over thousands of posts, particularly in an emergency.
These level of bugs will persist for at least 6 months or more.
This and 'how to' information is tarnishing you're brand greatly.
My suggestion is a 24hr support line to continue the Problem discovered- 8:34PM / Problem solved- 9:11pm trend.

Dave,

If there is a legitimate criticism of RED it should be that we are scrambling to build a business and suffering growing/coming out of the garage pains. We could have waited until we were completely done, but that wouldn't have been any fun. Eh?

I'm not worried about our brand at all. We are doing difficult tricks from scratch. If the market is irritated, they can certainly wait until we are finished to jump in with no penalty.

I kinda like it this way. Danger at every turn.

Jim

We do have 24/7 tech support via our Technical Support webform at http://www.red.com/contact_us

Write up your issue and send via webform. A tech on-call will get back to you via phone or email.

Thanks, BC

Do you mean there are people 24/7 standby to take care of problems? Or will somebody get back to you during CA office hours?

I haven't needed tech support yet, but since I am in a part of the world where we are working when you are sleeping (are you ever?) it would be great if somebody would get back to you soon.

Yes, there is technical support is available 24/7. And they will get back to you 24/7.

Disclaimer: This is TECHNICAL SUPPORT. Please only page them afterhours for technical support with your RED equipment. Please don't page with "What serial number am I?", with "When will the 18-85 ship?", etc. This is if you have a true technical issue that needs immediate attention.

Thanks for understanding - and letting us catch a few more zzzz's....

Wow, that's great. I didn't even know that.

PS: please make sure you get enough sleep and take a holiday every now and then :-)

that's weird.. just tried that with my cf card yesterday.. and it worked... i went for the same exact settings you picked.

i tried 16:9 first.. played it on my mac... the qt file showed half the video on weed... so i emailed sean at red support.. he was like.. those arent supported yet.. just redcine. so i went back to 2:1 4k redcode 36. and dude... it was sweeet. i shot it at asa320... or iso 320. it looked grainy a-weetal bit.. "i'm too grain sensitive"... until i exported it to dpx. it was as smooth as lindsay lohan's ass.
