  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monkey Extract Questions

Craig

How to use the new color science on version 3.201?

Further to that...

REDColor and REDGamma will be in the next Monkey Extract update (in the next day or so).

There is no sign of FLUT in the 194 beta of redline so we'll need to wait for that.

QMaster and redline scripts for the terminal have not yet been updated yet so stick with your old Monkey Extract if you're on a render farm.

Some of the newer quicktime codecs aren't on the list for the 194 beta.

Craig,

What's the word on your new software, Film Convert?

thanks,
Benjamin Rowland

Sorry - missed that post.
Didn't get the email (which seems to be an ongoing reduser.net issue)

Film Convert is still being built.
We hit a few road blocks but now have a high-profile color science expert working with us, so things are coming along nicely.

No ETA for you yet I'm afraid.

Hi Gopal,

Color science is automatically applied by the 194 beta of Redline.
The new tab in the Monkey Extract render settings also has a drop box that allows you to select an older color science version for older footage. The default is to use the current color science version.

Cheers
Craig

Craig,

How it applies for both linear and log workflow?

Can you tell us what Film Convert will be used for?

Thanks!

Hi,
We are about to conform our project and would like to use monkey extract.

Can you tell me if our scaled shots (punch-ins/zooms) will be intact after the conform?

The prospect of having to go back in and re-do all of these is very daunting.

Thanks so much!

I assume that you have a project file (like a FCP xml) that has zooms etc added as an effect? In this case these effects will still be present in the roundtrip XML after render and you should not lose those settings, however the DPX files will not be zoomed & scaled automatically based on your XML file in Monkey Extract... Monkey is just a conform tool.

Getting the following error and Monkey Extract 3.200 quits.

Attached error message.

This error is caused by the redcode quicktime codec crashing when generating thumbnails. I am currently testing with the latest release version from red.com./support (not the MX compatible beta). If you are getting crashes when it is generating thumbnails then please install this version.

ALso, if you are using a rocket then set your processors setting to 1... if you try to multithread while using the rocket it will cause problems. I plan to add an auto-detect so that it does it automatically for you, but until then...

Cheers

Hi Craig, I've got a question...
We're rendering offline mxf files for a client with rocketcineX. The output mxf filenames from rocketcineX are not completely similar to the source filenames (at the end). The source file is called: A036_C005_0514BQ_001.R3D and what comes out of Rocketcinex is A036_C005_05V0138009.MXF. But all the necessary file info is there.

Now the edit's complete, we're trying to "copy all red footage" to one of our harddisks. But now monkey extract doesn't recognize the clip names in the edl.

Here is an edl example:
TITLE: EDL CAMERATEST FORMAT: CMX 3600 4-Ch
001 000 V C 10:37:21:09 10:37:25:01 00:00:00:00 00:00:03:17
* FROM CLIP NAME: A036_C005_05V0138009
002 006 V C 09:36:54:21 09:37:00:09 00:00:03:17 00:00:09:05
* FROM CLIP NAME: A006_C006_05V019AA74
003 008 V C 11:01:46:16 11:01:49:23 00:00:09:05 00:00:12:12
* FROM CLIP NAME: A008_C001_05V01CE578

Is there a way to let Monkey Extract recognize these files and copy all the footage? Or let monkey extract only use the first 9 characters?

Thanks,
Gideon

Where do you download 3.200?

We have a link to this a few pages back on Reduser. Just scroll back a few posts on this thread.

We don't have an official download yet since we are relying on unofficial betas from Red. Basically there are a few loose ends to tidy up so 3.200 isn't quite at full release stage. If you are using 3.200 or the new Redline betas, please ensure you test your workflow properly prior to actually needing it.

I think it is probably the 3 character TapeName that is confusing it rather than the extra characters in the From Clip name.

Unfortunately we don't have any way to tweak this behavior from the front-end. W'd have to write some code.

Send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I'll follow this up for you.

If we set it to 1 then how can we do encoding?

The Rocket only decode, it does not encode other codecs.

It's been almost 8 months since the last beta.

What Sup?

On the 8 months, we've essentially been holding out till redline supported Red Rocket since it was either wait or rewrite redline ourselves (which seemed a bit silly if RED were going to do it eventually anyway). It took longer than expected.

The Red Rocket decodes very fast, but it doesn't share well between redline instances at the moment. Setting the number of concurrent threads to 1 means that Red Rocket will decode one clip at a time instead of trying to switch back & forth between two or more clips, which has caused problems for some.

Yes, the Red rocket doesn't ENcode, but it does free the CPU up to do the encoding. The Rocket decodes to memory and then the CPU encodes while the rocket decodes the NEXT frame. This means you will still use a bit of CPU while using rocket, but I am getting near realtime (16-20FPS) on 1080p full debayer quicktimes with rocket on a 4-core mac pro.

Setting your thread count to 1 doesn't affect encoding since the bottleneck becomes the red rocket, which is fastest doing a single clip at a time anyway.

Hi Nigel.

I have lots of footage on various different hard-drives and I need a programme I can use an edl with to find the footage and then copy it onto a new hard drive, then move onto the next hard-drive I plug in and find and copy the relevant files. So basically the problem is that I can't plug in all of the hard drives at the same time and I can't copy all of the footage onto my hard-drive as I don't have enough storage. So, I need to get a feature film down from 8 hard drives to one 2TB hard drive without copying everything onto the system. Do you know if Monkey Extract can do this?

It can do it if you can plug them all in at once (using aliases to each drive in a single folder - let me know if you need some help setting this up), however it needs to be able to access all the footage at the start of rendering so that it can match your EDL to the footage available. You sure you don't have a big hub laying about?
