  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mike Seymour

The tree shot looks absolutely amazing. Can't wait to see more.

I noticed some solarization in the lens flare. It looks like the X track got data, but since it was in the flare, it was desaturated in comparison to the M track. I wonder if there would be a way to measure the color/saturation of both images and keep the data with the most saturation. Out of my depth here, and it will be interesting to see how the HDRx™ processing develops over time.

Thank you Mike for posting.

I guess I would say dont worry to much about these shots - as guides to HDRx - they are not posted as such - since
1) we are still learning
2) Red is still developing
3) these are jpeg down res compressed shots

We just wanted to show some "happy snaps" from our HDRx work - so this is more rushes than finals.

HDR

"I have seen some very quick outputs of blended HDRx from the Sydney car shoot. With almost no work they looked natural and frankly filmic. The dynamic range we pushed the camera through was insane and it held it all. There is no other camera or stock that could do this.

I am keen to put the camera through a thorough test regime and to see if you can find the limits of the "HDR" mode. If it is possible its likely only to be in the extreme case and assuming you expose properly on your base track then you are still in a good position. I suspect the 800asa can be pushed with Epic due to its uber clean electronic processing. I am sure Mike will chip in with "science" as soon as the results are processed.

It should also be remembered the Epic is only at the beginning of its evolutionary cycle. Using RedOne as the template we can assume this camera with its powerful processors will only grow in capability as time goes. BUT its already one kickass machine that will help change the face of production."

Spot quiz :

1) Who is in this photo shooting?

2) What craft were we in when this was taken today?

I dont know how you did it Mike, but you finally got the Rebel-leader Stu himself on board holding that EPIC./
I know all the thoughts running through his head. Form Factor, resolution, All the content for his next book "Epic-s For the digital rebel", The right camera for his Movie Psyops, his next redgiant invention "iphone app to grade 5K epic stills", How many italian coffee grinders and capuccino makers for the price of an Epic?
I love it.
Awsome pics Mike!

Hes actually rocking a Red cap and Oakley glasses. I'm sorry if others don't understand, to us Stu fans, its like Michael Jordan officially endorsing Armani.

Thanks for taking the time to share Mike and gang...this is fantastic stuff. I am curious about that mini gyro rig and how it performs as well.

Our DVRebel who used to play with toy helicopters has grown into a 5KRebel with gyros and a really big toy helicopter :'D

Cheers!

Here is another behind the scenes video

Thanks to my friend Stu on his 16mm-35mm from the co-pilot seat.

PS
The reason I did not fall out is that John was bracing me from off screen camera right.

Spot Quiz answer

1. Stu Maschwitz....and he's keen wearing the hat in an open doorway!

2. Eurocopter AS350(single)/AS355(twin) Ecureuil ("Squirrel") or AStar/TwinStar as it's known as in North America.

Yes it is a B2 Squirrel. Our top speed yesterday was 110 Knots, but most was 40-70 Knots

Actually Alfie was not ex military. But he was the key pilot on Crossing the Line for PJ and Jim + Lord of the Rings + Narnia. He is also a gentleman and one hell of a pilot. We flew up 4500 ft not more than a few metres from a huge waterfall - Stu - John and I were sitting - dead quite - speechless - filming - in awe.
We only got to fly with him - due to my good friend and insanely good director Mark Toia - ( who will will run rings around me when he gets his EPIC BTW)

mike

Just to add to that post - Jim - if you were to give one man an EPIC right now - who would deliver kick arse footage - It would be Mark Toia at ZoomTV in QLD.

+1 on a Toia Epic. The man has made the M sensor and an 18-50 zoom look like Panavision. What will he do with 5k and HDRx???

That's Alfie reflected in Mike's vari-ND. What happens is, Alfie points the chopper at what will look good, and then you just turn the camera on and don't drop it.

-Stu

Edit: Reflected in the shot I posted above that you couldn't see. Derps. Fixed now.

Id really like to know more about that Gyro rig hanging off the bottom of the Epic Mike?
Can I have more info on that please.. Web site etc. I'm going to buy one.

Cheers mate

oooh and I'm glad Alfie worked out for you, He's my favorite pilot, great old bloke. I love him.
I have another (in AUS) ... as good. (keeping him secret) :) PM me if your really needing

I'm so glad the testing is going strong too. I so can't wait to get mine. I'm beside myself at the moment. I have huge test plans for it.

Also, Who ever is going to do RED SHOOTS in Dubai, think twice. I'm here at the moment, It's a dogs breakfast. I plan on sorting this country out before I leave.
Great locations, great crews, but RED camera setups and post over here is crap. Best to take it home with you.
I'm on a mission to get it right for when I come back next time. It's an incredible backdrop and worth shooting here.
