What about for ENG work? Interviews? Documentary? Sometimes you don't have a sound department, sometimes you just plug a mic into the camera and being able to do micro adjustments without going through camera menus is extremely valuable. Rather then forcing people into Red's ideas about operation, why not make the camera/module more flexible and versatile? Having knobs wouldn't take anything away from those who have a mixer, but it would make the lives of those who don't a lot easier. Make them pop out so that when they're not in use they're flush with the module, or button knobs like on a HVX, etc. Sony, Panasonic and the rest might have been completely wrong about 1080p being good enough, in 2/3 inch chips, or on having virtually no upgrade path for their cameras, but were they really wrong about having volume control knobs?
But you don't have to "go through menus" to adjust the microphone's pre-amp level - just touch the Audio Level Meter to bring up the input gain sliders. Touch a second time to make that window go away.
As for Line Level that really does imply the use of an external mixer - by its very definition.
All audio modes on EPIC have 24-bit 48KHz circuits and soft limiters (and the option of AES / EBU direct digital audio ingest) so its quite a bit more advanced than most other cameras.
