Metadata Issue for Client

Just shot a commercial for a client. We did many takes and of course every take is working fine for them, except the one take they want to use. Here is the message I received from the client:

We're in a bit of a jam with our final take of the second shot which seems to be broken somehow as I'll outline below. The final spot is supposed to be uploaded for broadcast asap so we would appreciate your help as we have to finalize this today.
So in looking at the takes recorded we have identified our final take as 102C tk 3.

This is equated to file A004_C024_0101QB_001.R3D

So if we look into the A004 Folder structure and go into folder "A004_C024_0101QB.RDC" we find a QB_001.R3D AND a QB_002.R3D. Furthermore we find an .RMD and .rtn file for 001 but not for 002.

Both of these clip's slates match the 102C tk 3 and time code. Now if I play 001, the supposed take, it is cut off in the middle where as if I play 002 it plays all the way through. If I bring 002 in Premiere it seems to work for a minute but will eventually truncate the first half. And of course 001 is the first half. But if I bring both files in and keep them together but only put 002 on the timeline it plays as the full clip. This seems to work accept when we go into color correct using any of the premiere red tools or the REDCINE-X PRO software, that linkage immediately breaks and the 002 clip goes back to being only the back half and or we get stripes/metadata errors etc (which makes sense because there's only metadata labeled for 001).

So something strange is going on here and it's beyond our knowledge of RED to figure this one out. This spot is supposed to be finished and uploaded for broadcast asap so anything you can do to either fix the footage or explain to us how to work through it it would be much appreciated. The second we go to do anything RED or anything metadata everything falls apart, and if we separate 001/002 in the folder structure things also fall apart.

I have attached the screen shot the client sent me with the file structure of the messed up clip. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Patrick

Did you edit the footage or just send it along to them? Did anyone change the file names anywhere along the way. (Hard to see the graphic since it is very small.) How is it being edited? (FCPX, PP, Avid?

Not sure I can help but it would be easier to try with m ore information about workflow.

Everythibg is normal
001 and 002 R3D files are the same clip truncated in camera to fit on a FAT formatted drive. It just means it is a longer clip.
Nothing should be removed and opening first segment will open the whole clip in any RED aware app (including premiere and REDCINE-X).

.rtn file is a low res thumbnail for in camera playback clip list
.RMD stores any metadata change made to the clip in post.

Both are not mandatory and having only one of each for the whole clip is normal.

Hope this helps. Just consider the top .RDC folder as your clip as a whole and the content of that folder should not be modified....

Here is a larger version of the image. Not sure why it is so small to begin with.

Just spoke with the client. It was some sort of error on their end. I believe they were not handling their workflow the right way. Started over and everything is fine. Thanks for the quick responses! Much appreciated.

Yeah check out the date last modifyed, every file is 1999. Accept the folder and the .RDM.
That wouldn't be the case with out some manipulation right?

I've had segmented R3D clips give clients a hard time when they dragged them in vs. using the media importer. I don't know why Adobe doesn't fix this but it'll invariably crash a larger project if clips are dragged in.

No manipulation. Looks like the camera had lost internal date and files were created with a wrong 1999 date.
.RMD sidecar file was created on computer with the correct date and the enclosing folder modification date was updated when that file was created by REDCINE-X.
