  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meet Charlie..

that's a winning first post right there.

I am pretty sure he is making fun of all those cop shows where they'll crop into heavily compressed B&W surveillance camera footage, starting with a shot of crowd of fifty, and getting down to a single guy's face, fill the whole damn screen... then they "Enhance!"... and end up with an image that looks like a 2:1 crop.

I'm still amazed at how far everythings come...seems like not too long ago things changed and now we are at working prototypes...brilliant job by RED!

Wonder what the next animal will be...

Technology and computer-related stuff is always "dumbified" on screen. I like how hackers have really nice interfaces to work with (no simple text command line/prompt), and how there's a magical "enhance" like you say that just doubles the resolution out of nowhere.

Also, hackers seem to be able to just hack and control everything... lol; as well, they never have problems or bugs with their hacking... it's all so smooth!

Yes and your hacking ability always seems to be proportional to the speed with which you type. In which case, Mavis Beacon must have been flat-out the best computer hacker ever.

oh I know, it made me laugh! i really did like the post. that always cracks me up when they do that bit in movies.

Gotcha. :) About hackers, there is also a lot of credit that should be awarded for emotional representations of complicated processes that allow to convey such things without killing momentum.

IMO it all comes down to the balance between realistic and not, and making sure you stick to the same tone throughout. A realistic movie can succeed in a great way, while a movie like "Swordfish" can also succeed at other goals. I enjoyed Hugh Jackman creating 3D cubes with 8 screens and typing fast, or typing fast despite certain "distractions". It fits the tone of the film perfectly. I don't think a montage of tedious code and error screens would have mixed well with Travolta spraying an M249 SAW off the top of his TVR.

I'd love to see her typing. iosdhfpnva8oieskkkkdfhLJJHVIJIHVBNL KJBKN KBLX

It is pretty interesting how you are able to compress that much information to RC28, i am actually looking at the image on a 42 Panasonic, very impressive, Absolutely stunning. The smooth glow in the beak and the radiance of the feathers is very cool.
Thanks for sharing.

Hey could someone run that through a high pass on ps and re post sharpened not home would really love to see in sharpened up

Is Charlie a video still or a "still" still?

When will we here more about the stills functionality of these new cams?

Since I am a documentary shooter of both stills and motion, I was hoping that Red could be my only camera(s) but after reading about a 10-15 startup time I am beginning to wonder if the Scarlet/Epic will be for stills, the same as the EOS cams are to video. ie you still need cam dedicated cam for each function.

Right now, I have the HPX500, 5D, 5DMII, and 1DMIII. I wanted the Red 1 but there was a waiting list when I needed the 500 ;(... While the DOF of the MII is nice I can not use use for professional video work due to its many limitations/flaws but for stills it's pretty good. I can turn it on and take a photo in 1/2 second but the shutter lag is an irritating 73ms, and it's autofocus tends to hunt.

I know most people here are film makers but since the new cams are being billed as still/motion hybrid it would be nice to hear a little more info about that aspect for us hybrid shooters.

Key questions for me are....

Compatible format?(Will I still be able to use my favorite image editing software?)
Where will the autofocus quality be?(5D-ish or 1D-ish)
Sleep mode for stills? (10-15 seconds is ok for video but not for stills)
Shutter Lag? (at or under 50ms?)
Highest shutter speed? (8k or higher I hope)

If I come to Red Day can I find out some of this info?

Charlie shot is a still taken from motion. All your questions will be answered before the release of EPIC and Scarlet.

That's what we thought, otherwise we'd consider it flipping us the bird, and we know Epic is no turkey...

About start-up time...I'm no engineer or programmer
but could certain "resources" like audio and simultaneous
output be delayed to get a faster start-up time?

It may be reasonable to assume that because of the ASIC that the firmware
needs this time to enable all the features but I wonder if
dumbing down to (sensor capture only) would decrease that initial
time, this way everyone's happy.

I have no need as I know of for that faster time but I see
that some are concerned.

Disclaimer: If this has been discussed already in another thread i apologize.

It's Redcode 28 and not at a high framerate, so effectively, you have.

True. But I was thinking sensor comparison on a 2/3", S35 and then an epic equivalent. My understanding is that the sensors have different SN ratios and lowlight capabilities...

To my eye, the image is soft. I had to do a very high amount of sharpening in photoshop to get it looking right. I am guessing that the OLPF is the culprit. As with the Red One, I feel that the anti-aliasing may be too aggressive. I would love to see how the same image looked with a slightly lighter OLPF.
