  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meaning of 16.5 stops of Dynamic Range

Ok, after a little bit of photometric research... a 750w, narrow field fresnel Source 4 at the hottest point, aimed straight at the camera would give you an EV rating of 20 at ISO100 (132000 candelas). Middle gray would be, I think, 130 cd/m2.

It would hurt a lot to look at that lamp, FWIW.

Has anyone actually metered the chips on a Xyla-21 and gotten anywhere near this much light through it?

And say you shift the chart down four stops to get at something attainable on the high end, that makes EV7 1 cd/m2 - which is 5 candelas blacker than any black surface I can find to read in my office now (the black soot in deep shadow at the back of my fireplace is reading 6 cd/m2).

Someone who has actually used a Xyla-21 and gotten real world spot meter readings, please chime in. I'm drowning in foot candles...

the main difference between the alexa sensors DR and he dragon DR from what I can see is ..the alexa DR has been available to buy for several years already..

I haven't shot the two side by side myself yet but from what I am seeing I'd have to agree with you. But let's see Arri do it at 5k/6k and then compare. I bet if RED went with a 4k sensor they probably could have gotten more stops of DR on this generation of tech...
