  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mattebox with 144mm rear opening?

Take the lens to a small local machine shop and they could probably make a pretty nice ring that has the right measurements. Probably also cost less than 500USD. Then for future needs you also have a local contact. But be aware it's addictive to be around those shops, almost like the store on red.com :)

Ah yes, the addiction continues!
I want it = I NEED IT !

Then you end up wanting to make stuff your self and end up renting more space then buying 3D printers, milling machines, lathes, drills, hammers spanners, endless sets of Torx, allen keys, stainless welding kit, collimators and so it goes on.

With the Strummer, from Bright Tangerine, you would use the MB without a donut however. +1 on the BT line. VIV would work as well

Thank you very much

From Clayton's first post:

Hi guys,
I am moving towards purchasing a Cooke 20-100 and definitely will need a mattebox which can be part of the lens support (it's a rather large sucker as most of you know). The thing is the only two mattebox's I could find with a 144mm rear opening are the Vocas MB-450 (seems to be a ton of them for sale right now) and the Movcam box's. Are there any other's with this same diameter that I haven't thought of?

The 143mm opening on the Bright Tangerine Strummer 6" backplate will not fit over the 144mm front diameter of the Cooke 20-100.
It will snug up to the lens, but will not provide the added support that Clayton is looking for.
(So clamp-ons will not fit the bill for obvious reasons)

As mentioned in a previous post, the only other matte box I am aware of with a 144mm opening is the ARRI MB-14.
I own one - it's a beast with a price tag to match.

Outside of not fitting that one Cooke lens, I've got to agree - the BT line is really nice.

I notice that the Arri MMB-1 has a 143mm rear opening. Does anyone know if this has enough latitude that it could accommodate the 144mm diameter of the Cooke or the RED 17-50?
It also appears that the O'Connor O'box has a step down of 150 to 143mm clamp ring. Same question, enough play in the system to accommodate the extra 1mm of the lens diameter?

Oh, and one other question. Why doesn't RED even bother to give the rear dimensions or other vital specs on their mattebox in their webstore? Is it 143mm as well?

So close, yet so far!

Hi Clayton,

I think I may have one sitting around that I don't use. Could you pm me the exact diameter of the lens barrel where it goes around?
