  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte Box Woes

Its going well. I'll have something soon... We're working on a few products and trying to balance the time we spend on each so they can all make it to market. Its quite the balancing act. Hopefully you guys won't be disappointed with what we come up with :)

You are a brave man CVB, Go for it ! I don't really like to have too much in front or the back of the lens, both cause problems. I'am very excited that you have taken this on and am looking forward to the end result.
Aloha

But one thing that an ND grad can do for you is reduce the brightness in a select area to a point that the digital camera can record more information, like in a bright sky -- which will give you greater flexibility in post. It's not always about using a grad for a grad effect. You can't manipulate detail in post if it wasn't recorded to begin with.

I did a 35mm film in Montana ("Northfork") under these amazing skies and the ND.6 grad was on the camera constantly - and I found when I did the final color-correction for home video that there was detail buried in the highlights that I could pull out of the skies because I had exposed more information there... because of the grads:

David,

those are amazing shots. Thanks for sharing. Stirs my soul.

David,
For big sky country, i'd bring the grads. I stand corrected.

snow covered ground is another thing grads are nice for.

Cool to hear Curt. I think you could have a HUGE market on your hands if you make a good one. Might bring you more cash to keep developing the mo con gear... and as a Preston owner, I'm VERY interested in these motors and the remote.

Matte + follow focus

Matte + follow focus

Well, matte box + follow focus really are two of the most overpriced items to complement a film camera setup, maybe Jim, while waiting for the boards to be respun, can draw something for us ... Should we start a special thread with a poll - who would buy a red matte box?
May the force be with Red.

Miles, did you read this whole thread? Curt v. Badinski of Viewfactor Studios is working on a Mattebox (system?) for a few weeks, so a somewhat universal mattebox (for red, too) is in the works.

This one is interesting one: http://www.geardear.com/index.html
not expensive at all, might just do the job..
It´s not metal thought, so I don´t know what will be left out of it after, say, 5 years of hard use...

I've already decided if Curt don't deliver, it's either the Geardear or RedRock for me. I'd rather pay $600 every 3 or 5 years than spend $3000 to $5000 once. The GearDear MB among the usual, includes french flag, side wings, long lens support, all for less than $600. If I have to buy 3 of these in a lifetime, I'm still pimping.

I think Curt posted the camera size pics with the pabst blue ribbon earlier this week and then went on a stress reducing blue ribbon bender. Good news though as he is now refreshed and has enough $$ in emptys from the bottle depot to pay for the proto-type.

 :) Read the thread, man...

Why are you laughing, Brook?

I´d like to chime in and also make a poll to check for demand of an affordable 4K digital cinematography camera that renders obsolencense obsolete, with several different data capturing options and (only if possible) finalcut support. Anyone interested in something like that? Maybe Nike or some other sports apparel manufacturer will build it, Phil Knight is very interested in new ventures...

Are you taking reservations?
