  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matrox MXO and MXO2 test

jaadgy,

No sweat. Just show me a link on the products you are thinking, then me and other fellows will suggest that would be a good choice or not.

If you purchase a panel with 1920 x 1200, more than 1920 x 1080, then most likely you will get dot by dot.

Also, if your final master will be YUV then YUV setup should be fine, but if the final media incorporates with RGB color space then should use RGB, the idea is that you can switch them depending on the product and equipment you are working with. Someone who is better to explain between YUV (usually video world, YUV is used) RGB, please chime in.

Something about this grade would be good, maybe Sumsung or NEC in this features and price range.
But remember, this is to get by, you should once experience a good production level studio monitors (they are expensive, I know).

For 40 inch, as client viewing and for your PlayStation 3.

Sony KDL-40V3000

Hope this one has better viewing angle than mine (mine is one generation older).

Kaku, this is what I have in mind:

what do you think, will this be good with the MX02, especially for CC? Keep in mind that I use FCS2's COLOR.

It looks good although it's probably not 10-bit panel.

I'm hesitant to say that I would trust 100% to grade on LCD panels although MXO2 can calibrate HDMI monitor from the MXO2 control panel, but if you haven't worked with appropriate environment with calibrated monitors, then this could be a start point.

If you can create your own reference to color grade from what you use, then your product looks good in most places, then you'll be fine.

Opinions everyone?

Matrox confirmed that HDMI output of MXO2 IS 10-bit.

Enhance Technology's SATA2 RAID with 8 drives and Areca RAID card (ARC1220ML I think)
What is the max performance with this set up?
Which set up for uncompressed 10 bit HD?
Thanks for your tests.

By the way, Matrox just updated the MXO2 driver this morning. Better cross and up/down conversion support.

Enhance Tech, SATA2 RAID goes up to over 600MB/sec, but that actually doesn't give you enough speed to entirely use up the capacity with 444, but 422 10 bit should be fine.

If you use newer RAID card especially that goes in to PCIe2.0 slot (upto x16 lane) then it might go faster.

I was talking to Accusys people at InterBEE and they seem to have better cards than Areca. Also, one of my Enhanced Tech's backplace died the other day. Maybe because of my job, I swap drives often, but probably they are not made to really swap all the time.

Check out the Cineraid, too.

Has anyone used this monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=223-9379) with the Matrox MXO2? With it's 10bit panel and 27 inches it seems like an ideal candidate. It's also fairly cheap!

Kaku Ito: What's your opinion of this?

Helge,

That looks affordable, I guess after a year, 24 inch display price becomes the 27 inch display. I would recommend to take a HDV camera or something with HDMI connection then test it before you buy tho.

I confirmed that the Sony Bravia KDL32 xbr6 is indeed a 10-bit panel, and supports 1080p/24p, so I'm gonna go down to BHPhoto and grab one;maybe I get a good bargain, today being Black Friday and all...I wonder if the absence of 120 Hz refresh rate is something I should worry about; only the 40" and up have it....hmm

Ask them to connect HDMI camera or something to make sure you'll be satisfied. As I said earlier and Omen mentioned, LCD does have issues with darker area, so consider to combine with SD Tube monitor maybe.

Actually that what Sony called motionflow doesn't always work, I have it off when I use it for client viewing. Upto certain motion it works okay, but beyond that, it really make weird motion, so be warned. It's mainly for watching interlaced materials.

So is there any way to use the MXO2 with redcine? it would be nice for quick color treatments on set.

Nope. MXO can display REDCINE because MXO is getting the signal from DVI port that is GPU accelerated. The realtime color manipulation of REDCINE is based on GPU (not the rendering part though), so the signal has to go through GPU. MXO2 gets signal from PCIe.

crap- i bought the new one and it won't do what i want- bummer. Well maybe redcine will have some output options one day.

I think I kept writing about that on this forum, sorry you missed it.

But MXO2 does 10-bit and HDMI calibration, so with the new Apple workflow, FCP wrapped QT offline to Color, you won't need to go to REDCINE much unless you have to do over 2k. MXO2 does work in FCP and Color, and of course other software (Premiere Pro not supported at this time but it will with CS4 later) so you won't regret it.

that's what I'm doing now for working in the studio, i was just hoping i could have a bargain basement monitoring solution on set using redcine and a laptop, since I already have the mxo2 in-hand. Guess it's time to break down and buy a monitor.

Sorry i missed your earlier post, I'm now going back and catching up. Thanks for all the info by the way.
