  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major_problem_build_20.1.3!!!

Not a scientific fact, but old cables and drives seem to be working better. RED is analyzing the problem and we know soon.

Shot a live band tonight and had major sata error reports until I switched out the cable. No problems after the switch, but some dropped frames from the excessive noise in front of the speakers. I would say for me it was definitely the cable.

I'am with you on this, my cable and 3 redrives are one of the first and after 1 and 1/2 year still working with the same cable and drives. No sata faults so far!

Well i don't know from where to start exactly, but lets start from here:

I totaly love the RED camera and all the RED survice and all, i think it's just great.Did a lot of shooting almost all the time just perfect.

From the 1st day i got the RED ONE i had some issues with the red drive.Under build 16 and 17 a had a lot of problems with the formatting and playback of drive. The camera reboots every time a tried to playback, hangs during the formatting of the DRIVE.Tested the drive with the two cabels, same thing on both of them.I overcome that problem bay just telling the clients that we have little problems with the playback on the RED DRIVE, and that shooting on the CF cards is just safer and it is actually and everything was ok.With build 20.1.3 i ve noticed something very odd.Under DC power ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH THE DRIVE ARE JUST GONE!!!!!!!!!!!! NO playback reboots, no hangs during format. I tested the drive on another body and it works perfectly with batteries and with DC power. After sending the log file RED tech told me that there is some problem with drive or the cables, the strange thing is that the drive and the cables work on the other body, and the drive all ready has been sent back for repair but when i received it didn't work.Guess that i have to send the camera, cables and the drive for evaluation. I am sure that the RED guys are working to salve all our problems.

Well fingers crossed here. We just upgraded to the new build and heading off to shoot a feature with a used 320gig HD we just got. We tested a shot for an hour and played back and had no problems so hopefully it will stay that way.

I noticed that too. When camera is on DC there is no sata errors.

My SATA error was with DC.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Used Build 20.1.3 for the first time on a commercial shoot and for the first time the camera locked up saying 'Body Hot'. I wonder if the camera was commenting on the sexy model we were shooting with but it was the first time it has ever happened. Going to roll back to Build 18.

20.1.3 is becoming "the voodoo build", all freaky things happen :)

Yes sorry, I meant AC. (No battery)

Maxim, I can confirm that I have seen this with a camera I used recently on a shoot (not my camera). When batteries were used and playback was engaged there wuld be the occasional lockup, reboot scenario. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to write a log file and send to RED. This camera was on Release Build 17. I had never experienced with any other RED before. This was quite different than the audio errors during playback that would show green frame and could be worked around somewhat. This one would actually cause a reboot. I believe that camera is being upgraded to Build 20, so if I use it again, I'll see if the problem has gone away. There were no issues when using AC Power with the camera.

Been testing 20.1.3 here under various conditions.. I've shot a few hours worth of footage over a couple days. Completely filled one RED drive and one RED RAM. No errors to report at this time.

Hi Jeff,
Do you have possibility to test both old and new type of drive cable?
Are you using red battery?

That will be the experience of the majority of users operating with 20.1.3. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have released it.

It isn't. I will repeat one more time. Please stop guessing, do exactly what RED tech support have asked, and we can help you.

Sorry. Just trying to help diagnose the problem.

For me this problem have been devastating, rendering the my red-kit crippled and my no1 customer pissed at me and my gear.

This morning I tested our Red #1129 with both our Red Drives, doing 50 takes on each drive without error. Anton Bauer Hytron 140 battery, 24 & 30 fps, 4K HD, Redcode 36. I did not remove our spare drive cable from the sealed bag; the cable I used has "Red" embossed on the rubber cover.

I'll do further testing, replicating the two failures out of 150 or so takes at 72 fps, 2K 2:1 that we experienced last week.

For us, it appears very random, impossible to replicate on demand. A tough nut to crack, but certainly no deal-killer. It falls over, so just hit record again and the fault disappears; at least that's what we got last week.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Janne, we do understand, but to help you we need you to do what RED tech support has asked.

We should take any further discussion about your camera off-line, so send me a P.M if you wish.

I appreciate the spirit in which these posts are being made, but we analyzed the issues and incorporated the appropriate changes into firmware.

That is what Build 20.1.3 is.

So I will repeat; if after installing Build 20.1.3 you are experiencing SATA-error messages on RED-DRIVE or RED-RAM, please contact RED tech support.
