  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major_problem_build_20.1.3!!!

Can't we get a little more information from Red's technical support? Please... I really need to be pro-active for this kind of things...

Any workaround solution? Anything we can do to prevent this from happening? Should we buy/keep a spare drive and/or cable? Should we always plan to shoot on flash cards, just in case? Is it a software bug or a new "feature" (error detection of some sort to prevent reboots during playback)?

This currently seems like a showstopper to me: I won't upgrade to build 20 until some light is shed upon this issue. The last thing I want to get is corrupted files and/or non-functionnal recrding device while shooting the TV Show that keeps me busy with everyday...

Is this issue just on the RED Drive or is it the RED Ram also?

I sent 2 red drives and 2 drive cables to Red because of this problem. Waiting to hear back from Red if they can find a problem?

I had no record problems before build 20. Just playback errors when my camera was hot, so I avoided playback on camera and no problems. Now with build 20 I was loosing a couple shots a day with NO warning and playback didn't work at all.

Hopefully Red figures out the problem with my drives.

What he said.
We have four cameras out on different productions and need to tell our clients something. This is a major issue it seems, at least two of our cameras are suffering from this.

We have been FedEx´ing cables and drives all over the country for a couple of days and need to know more about this issue.

This is the worst bug/malfunction since before build 15...

Good luck,
Fred

I have same problem

I have same problem

I have same problem when I shooting last week on the high crane, beside nothing, no motor, no high speed machine, only a 400V battery for my daylight sungun. end up I have to change to redCF16 to continuous the filming till finish.

I had the error about a dozen times before changing the cable eradicated the problem altogether.

Paul

Hi Paul,

I fear the cable actually has nothing to do with the error, just chance that it hasn't reared it's ugly head since you changed the cable.

It occurs with very low frequency, paving the way for superstitious attribution.

Of course, you could very well be 100% correct!

I trust Red will sort it out soon enough, but I must say I like the new build very much. Glad to trade the constant playback errors for an occasional blip.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Well put it this way, it did it over and over again, I tried a few things before changing the cable. Once I changed the cable it didn't do it. Once I put the cable back on it did it. Seemed pretty evident what the problem was. Perhaps it's different for others though.

One note of interest. The cable that had issues was the newer type with the Red logo on the sheath, the old rubber ones seem to work better.

Wow!

I agree you did the test very well and it certainly sounds like you have nailed it down.

Thank you, Paul.

I think I've got the older cables...

Good shooting and best regards,

No, that's just a guess. If you are having this issue please contact RED technical support.

Hi Stuart, I have but no help yet.
I have tested this a lot now. I have tested different drives and different cables.

I can with 99% certainty say it is because of bad cables, and that 20.1.3 is reporting errors more.

Send me a new cable? Please :)

I have the new -bad- ones with the logo.
....but all bad cables work fine with build 17 :/

What is strange, is that the drive sound much "smoother" under 17.
The drive make more noise and clicks under 20.

Interesting. It seems like the tolerance or something has changed. Any older cables to compare with or all new?

Same stuff here. Sent in an older 6 foot cable to RED a couple of days ago and waiting. Not seen the problem yet with two drives and the old short cables.

We had 5 cameras over the weekend, and shot 20 hours of footage on the new build, all with older cables and not a single issue.

Anyone having the issue with older cables? Could be a good place to start...

All cables we have worked fine under 17, and we did not have any problem with reboot or drop frame, I would really like a menu selection that says "Disable SATA error messages".

Then RED may not need to change hundreds of cables if they still work :)

I was told that in a pinch you should just drop back down to build 17 and cross your fingers.

Also I was told that its mostly the drives that are faulty although some cables are bad too.

Same error yesterday format hd and solved. 34 shoot 1 lost.

I guess they are working days and nights to nail the problem down. I would suggest that if you have this problem and have to shoot using the drives and can't send them in just downgrade to 17 or 18 and process the data in the new REDAlert which gives you the new color science anyways?

cheers, Xax

Is this issue just on the RED Drive or is it the RED Ram also?

I have the problem with REd Ram after upgrading to build 20. No problems in build 17 then switch to 20 in beta and issues. RED has informed me they think it is a cable or drive problem based on the camera logs I sent in. Just tried new release of build 20 and same problem. Waiting for RED Drive and new cable to continue shooting.
