  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Magic Motion"...

If this post is correct ...

As I remember they said the two stream HDRx™™ mode is to be merged in post. EasyHDR™™ is the one that does it in camera.

and EasyHDR™ is in camera, then judging by this post from JJ ….

We are just beginning to test HDRx™™™ under a variety of conditions... so far we are wildly happy with the results. But there are still lots of situations to go. The fact that the two streams are "conjoined" is a huge deal. If they weren't, an HDR mode could only be used with slowest motion scenes. We like the images we are getting with high motion or pans better than in normal mode. It is still early. Testing continues. The cautious side of me thinks we may run into an exception somewhere (haven't seen it yet)... good news is that if that does happen, you can ignore the "x" frame stream and have normal mode even after you have shot.

Jim

… then Magic Motion can only be achieved in post by shooting HDRx™ not in camera with Easy HDR ?
(and having the capture hardware and post thru-put to deal with the double duty data )

2nd time posting this...

EasyHDR™™™- done in camera with "Magic Motion" only.

HDRx™™™- done in post from two streams. Either "Magic Motion", MNMB (More Normal Motion Blur), or ignore 2nd stream for "Normal".

Jim

Next port of call then is for someone to design a HDRx™ preset for After Effects and Nuke for matching motion blur on digital elements. ;)

Great stuff... reminds me of the post for build 16 ...120 frames at 2k.

This announcement seems more substantial than build 16, I can't wait to see it in action!
We are using the Sprint camera/ Phantom for Super slow motion on SNF... usually at 250 frames per second.
Will the EPIC reach 250?
Is it possible to have an option for the Operator control panel similar to the Sony 750 or the Sprint cam's? The ability to control Iris, paint, flares, blacks, and Gama in real time remotely to the EPIC would be huge!

so when you say

We have decided to add $1000 to the price of Scarlet and include HDRx capability. The extra money will go to more boards and another ASIC plus development. The improvement is more than worth the effort. The image possibilities and capability are incredible.

We watched the voting, but more than that we know how much improvement HDRx is to the program.

It will only cause a slight delay in the program. You need to trust on this one...

Jim

then are you only referring to HDRx not EasyHDR ?

to use the extra feature the scarlet owner must also be able to handle double data on capture and in post?

J. You are killing me.

The new Scarlet will have the same options as EPIC.

What exactly are you asking? Read my posts before you respond.

Jim

Let me help you out...

With either EPIC or the new Scarlet you have a choice between EasyHDR (same data rate as Normal) or HDRx (double the data rate).

Jim

i think he's asking if the scarlet will see an increase in its data rate for HDRx™™ or if the data rate will remain the same and the HDRx™™ is just working off of what is available.

a more appropriate question i think is if the processing power of the scarlet itself is being increased or is the HDRx™™ working off of the same processing power plus a few boards (whatever those boards do:-P)? tho ultimately as long as it works i'm happy:-)

edit: nm, re-reading it, i'm way off as to what he's asking:-P

We are increasing the number of boards and ASICs in Scarlet. It will be as capable as EPIC with regards to EasyHDR and HDRx.

Thank you for adding this feature. HDR an important milepost in the quest to match or exceed the DR and aesthetic qualities of film. It should be a signature feature of every Red camera.

Thats the missing piece I was looking for.
Because good lord what would we do with double data on indi-budget post pipelines?

J. You are killing me.

sorry Jim but thanks for responding.
I may be a thorn in your side but hey ... at least I'm consistent !

I have tried to keep it to constructive prodding and I hope you don't see me as a useless troll.
Should we ever meet I promise to keep my comments to myself,
sip my pint quietly
and just listen.

OK then... come visit.

What about the addition of HDR to the non 2/3 Scarlets..Will the
price increase and addition of boards be about the same or maybe way too
early to tell just now.

The only other camera left to talk about is the Scarlet S35. It too has less than capable boards and ASICS for HDRx and Easy HDR. We are looking at that now.

The others... FF35, 645 and 617 all have the proper boards and ASICS.

Ho man! this place is all full of expectations, anxity, dissappontments etc. etc..

Disappointments? We just come out with the prospect of 18 stops of dynamic range and a new/better motion capture and disappointed comes up?

If anyone is disappointed, try a 5D.

Disappointment because, it is only here on web and in your lab, not in our hand.
